Description of problem: KDE freezes when trying to resize or move windows in their un-maximized condition (the one b/w the minimized and maximized condition). Only way to recover from the crash is a hard reboot. Ctrl+Alt+Backspace/Del/Esc does not work. I have seen this problem occurring for Firefox, GIMP as well as KDE programs like 'Folder View Settings'. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): How reproducible: Steps to Reproduce: 1. Choose a Window which is not in its maximized condition 2. Try moving the window by clicking on the bar that has the minimize/maximize/close buttons or try the resize option when the cursor changes. 3. If you're using the KDE4 desktop effects with the nVidia proprietary driver, please try the nvidia 275.09.07 packages from the nonfree/updates_testing repository.

Thanks for the response. Yes I am using KDE4 with the desktop effects. The problem still persists even though I have updated to the "nvidia 275.09.07" package. Please let me know if you'd like any additional details.
Did you restart your system after that?
CC: (none) => sander.lepik
Yes. In fact I ended up restarting 3 times. 2 of those times I had to restart after replicating the freeze.
What's the output of: su dkms status uname -a grep Driver /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Please find the output below - [mrigs@neptune ~]$ su Password: [root@neptune mrigs]# dkms status nvidia-current, 275.09.07-0.1.mga1.nonfree, 2.6.38.7-desktop-1.mga, i586: installed vboxadditions, 4.0.6-4.mga1, 2.6.38.7-desktop-1.mga, i586: installed virtualbox, 4.0.6-4.mga1, 2.6.38.7-desktop-1.mga, i586: installed [root@neptune mrigs]# [root@neptune mrigs]# uname -a Linux neptune 2.6.38.7-desktop-1.mga #1 SMP Sun May 22 12:29:42 UTC 2011 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux [root@neptune mrigs]# [root@neptune mrigs]# grep Driver /etc/X11/xorg.conf Driver "nvidia"
Does the same issue happen in a new user account? (just to rule out any misbehaving config files in the current account).
Depends on: 1817 => (none)
Testing with a different account did the trick. It seems like an issue with the "Window Decorations" feature in "Workspace Appearance". I tried to customize this newly created account the same way I had customized my original account and faced the same freezing issue. It's occurring with most of the Window Decorations and so I have reverted to the original laOra decoration. No problems with laOra.
Is it still valid with current cauldron ?

Sorry. I missed out these last two emails/comments. These days I was only working with the default laOra decoration which was not giving any trouble. Today, for a change I tried to change the window decoration to a different one, and I experienced the freeze again. Apologies for bringing this up again. Please let me know if it needs to be tracked as a different Bug or you'd want this to be re-opened. no problem, reopening this report Setting Mageia version to "1", because you don't run cauldron. If you do have cauldron on another partition on the same system, please report whether the problem exists there as well assigning to nvidia-current maintainer @ anssi Please set status to ASSIGNED if you think this bug is assigned correctly. If for work flow reasons you can't do that, then please put OK on the whiteboard instead. Of course, assign back if you don't think a package you maintain is the culprit (and please explain) :)

It took me a while to get cauldron on my system. I have it finally as a dual boot. Anyway, the issue is not reproducible in Cauldron. I tried with a few of the Window Decorations (Air-black, kdust, among them) and did not find resizing causing a freeze. Here are details of the system - [mrigs@localhost ~]$ su Password: [root@localhost mrigs]# dkms status nvidia-current, 290.10-1.mga2.nonfree, 3.2.2-desktop-1.mga2, i586: installed nvidia-current, 290.10-1.mga2.nonfree, 3.2.2-desktop-1.mga2, i586: installed-binary from 3.2.2-desktop-1.mga2 [root@localhost mrigs]# [root@localhost mrigs]# uname -a Linux localhost.localdomain 3.2.2-desktop-1.mga2 #1 SMP Thu Jan 26 10:13:36 UTC 2012 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux [root@localhost mrigs]# [root@localhost mrigs]# grep Driver /etc/X11/xorg.conf Driver "nvidia" [root@localhost mrigs]#
@ Mriganka Thanks a lot for installing cauldron to check this bug It is good to know this issue isn't there in cauldron, knowing that might help Anssi to fix this for 1 :)

I enjoy Mageia 2 but since I work with, it happens very often that the system freezes and I have to restart my computer. It happens when many windows are open or when resizing (I don't know). Il happens often. No solution with task killing (Ctrl + Esc)

This message is a reminder that Mageia 2 is nearing its end of life. Approximately one month from now Mageia will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Mageia 2. At that time this bug will be closed as WONTFIX (EOL) if it remains open with a Mageia 'version' of '2'. Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Mageia version prior to Mageia 2's end of life. Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we may not be able to fix it before Mageia 2 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Mageia, you are encouraged to click on "Version" and change it against that version of Mageia. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Mageia release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete. -- The Mageia Bugsquad
