Description David Walser 2016-09-04 19:35:57 CEST
On a Mageia 5 VM upgraded to Cauldron, the first time I logged into Plasma it came up fine. Every other attempt to log in after that, after the splash screen goes away, results in a black desktop with no panel or background or anything. Leaving it sitting for a few minutes results in the KDE lock screen running, so Plasma seems to be running in some form, or at least part of it, but most of it isn't.

I deleted some Plasma configuration files in ~/.config and sometimes that will result in being able to start Plasma again. I don't know if that's a coincidence or if it's just hit and miss. Also, I noticed that sometimes you get the default Mageia background and sometimes the upstream default one.

Did you install sddm as a first step?

I lost my Mageia 5 installation meanwhile. When I tried the upgrade last, the transition to plasma 5 did not work, perhaps due to a missing meta-package.

Waiting the ok from the Mageia KDE group for another try. Anyway I would recommend a fresh installation for KDE users.

sddm gets installed manually.

I am also concerned about missing packages. An awful lot of stuff gets orphaned when upgrading from mga5.
Comment 3 David Walser 2016-09-04 21:10:26 CEST
I meant sddm gets installed automatically.

Not at the moment. The exact list will depend on exactly which packages you had installed in Mageia 5 before the upgrade, of course.

As for the main issue in this bug of Plasma reproducibly not working at all after the first login, I'm raising this to blocker status as that's obviously a huge problem. I'll check if the issue still persists with the updated Plasma packages just pushed to Cauldron this weekend.

david,

If you double the amount of ram available to your virtual machine, does that make a difference?

Hi Ben,

I doubled it from 512 MB to 1024 MB and the issue persists.
Comment 8 David Walser 2016-09-10 17:45:08 CEST
I doubled it again to 20148 MB and it still persists.
Comment 9 Ben McMonagle 2016-09-11 01:04:29 CEST
I had problems with a i586 virtual box single DE install of plasma, increasing available ram from 1024 to 2048 fixed the problem for me, hence my suggestion

Comment 10 Barry Jackson 2016-09-13 14:09:55 CEST
I am seeing this on an i586 laptop recently net-installed with plasma cauldron.
In my case it seems to happen when rfkill randomly acquires a software block.
Switching to a tty and logging in as root and running
rfkill unblock all
systemctl restart prefdm

and logging back in appears to clear the issue and wireless works OK, and the black screen does not happen again in that session.

networkmanager is not installed - everything is clean install regarding wireless/networking, although I did have an issue with rfkill blocking setup of wireless initially.

This issue started after I began installing a few packages, notably skype and kodi, I am wondering if one of them upset some network config. Until then I had re-booted many times without problems.

No idea if this is related to this bug but the symptoms look very similar.

I installed Mageia 6 STA1, KDE, DVD media Classic, on a computer with Nvidia graphics card. Once installed Mageia 6 (Cauldron), opened the plasma once, the automatic update of the packages was made, but many packages were not installed due to conflict between them. After I restart the computer, the KDE Plasma opened the login screen correctly. Logged, the environment Graphical opened but got black screen, and must enter commands in text-mode to access the applications. I closed the session with the Plasma and open a session with Gnome, which worked without problem, without black screen.

See below the list of packages that did not install after the automatic update:

The following 17 programs are installed:

- bluedevil-5.7.95-1.mga6.x86_64

In two installations of Mageia 6 STA1 I checked today, October 1st, all the updates were installed without problems. There was no conflict of packages, and the plasma environment is working correctly (see bug 19479)
Thank you

Comment 15 David Walser 2016-10-03 13:58:54 CEST
Was not fixed for me as of 5.8 beta. Will have to update my mirror and try 5.8.0 hopefully next weekend.
Comment 16 Nicolas Lécureuil 2016-10-20 09:45:52 CEST
Please test with plasma 5.8.1
Comment 17 Nicolas Lécureuil 2016-10-29 22:02:58 CEST
Please reopen if still valid with plasma 5.8.2

Just did a fresh Cauldron upgrade, and second login to Plasma worked OK.
