Description Max Perl 2016-07-06 16:17:06 CEST
Description of problem:
I suffer from system freezes in Mageia 5 and in Mageia 6. I don't know the reason and I don't know which informations I could pass to solve the problem. A big problem for reporting is that the clock after shutdown (with power button pressed) go back and so I don't know whether the logs are about the freeze...

Please let me know which informations could be helpful.
For Mageia 5 you can find some files at https://forums.mageia.org/en/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=11194

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
I don't know

How reproducible:
From time to time. Not reproducible. More often on the Mageia install at the SSD harddisk

The freezes seem to correlate with this kernel bug regarding baytrail processors: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=109051

I am testing the workaround with "intel_idle.max_cstate=1". At the moment I am confident that this hack solves the problems but I need a little bit more time and will give a more detailled feedback in a few days...

There are more bugs about Bay Trail, so this might be a duplicate

https://bugs.mageia.org/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=bay trail

However, I don't have time to read them. I think tmb mentioned in a bug report or on a mailing list, that problem isn't in the kernel, but in the Bay Trail hardware.

Anyway, assigning to tmb, even if hardware bugs aren't Mageia bugs, because he considers patching the kernel for all BayTrails.

Just for information: since adding the kernel option I had no freeze any more...

Regarding the question of patching the kernel I am unsure. It would be great for beginners, if the Baytrail systems would work out of the box, of course.
But at https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=109051 some people report that they do not have freezes with some chipsets. Additionally there is reported that "intel_idle.max_cstate=1 would result in seriously increased power consumption".

If we can say, that almost all Baytrail systems suffer from the freeze problems, I would do the patch solution. If then in very few instances there is a increased power consumption although the patch was not neccessary, ok c'est la vie... But if there are many Baytrail systems that actually don't need the patch, then I wouldn't do it.

Alternative solutions are:
-> Adding an errata entry (I will do this the next days for Mageia 5 and can do this for Mageia 6, too)
-> Adding an alternative 3.16 kernel for Baytrail chips

PS.: I have still problems with waking up after hibernation and suspend/standby. Can the Baytrail problem be the reason for this, too?

Mass-reassigning all bugs with "kernel" in the Source RPM field that are assigned to tmb, to the kernel packagers group, because tmb is currently MIA.

Assignee: tmb => kernel

Hello,

a fix for this bug is included in kernel 5.3 (present in mga7 and cauldron).

I can confirm that my machine affected by this bug doesn't freeze anymore with updated kernel.

On the kernel bug 109051, there are multiple positive reports and one negative.
