Description Olivier LE ROY 2016-06-30 08:26:53 CEST
Description of problem:
It is possible to get the xsession screen in full UHD resolution but once login credentials are entered, Plasma or Gnome won't start, returning to the xsession screen immediately.
This is not a problem of optimus graphics cards on these Dell laptop, because, I blacklisted the nouveau driver in Grub2 with "rd.driver.nouveau=blacklist" or "nouveau.modeset=0" options.
Please see xorg config file and log attached. xsession starts in full UHD resolution but Plasma or Gnome won't start.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Mageia 6 cauldron up to date as of 2016-06-29

How reproducible:
Systematically

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot Linux
2. In xsession screen, enter the login and password, choose Plasma or Gnome and click on "Identification".
3. Plasma or Gnome won't start, returning to the xsession screen immediately.

Could you please try what worked for Peter Woldering and others in bug 16245, see
https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16245#c5 :

Comment 4 Olivier LE ROY 2016-07-01 08:23:14 CEST
Hi,

I used 'rdblacklist=nouveau nouveau.runpm=0 xdriver=intel' options in grub2, as advised in bug 16245, (https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16245#c5).

rdblacklist=nouveau is deprecated, I had to change it to rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau.

But in this case, the X server doesn't start at all.

It looks as though forcing the use of intel driver doesn't allow the X server to work.

Regards,

Olivier le Roy

Comment 5 Olivier LE ROY 2016-07-06 22:15:51 CEST
I could eventually have this issue solved, though the fix is still unclear to me.

I had to go through the installation process of Mageia 6 cauldron again.

After update and reboot, I could have access to a console (which was no longer possible before) and I had to remove all Nvidia component the following way:

rpm -qa | grep nvidia | xargs urpme

After this, I could reboot and, without specifiying arguments in grub2, the i915 driver was automatically selected, and is now functional.

Thanks for your help,

regards,

Olivier le Roy
