Description of problem: In Xfce DE, unable to playback .avi or .mp4 files.
Parole media player advises "the stream is taking too much time to load"
mplayer presents a white screen,
gnome player presents a window with user controls with "loading..."

Mageia-6-sta1-i586-DVD.iso
DATE.txt: Fri May 20 15:04:58 CEST 2016


How reproducible: every time


Steps to Reproduce:
1.install Xfce  only DE from above .iso, reboot
2.login and set online repos and update to latest.
3.locate an .avi or .mp4 file and attempt to play using Gnome player, Mplayer or Parole media player  .
4. see above description of problem for outcomes

LXDE updates

before the updates, mplayer would load and play .mp4 file.
after updates, mplayer just presents a black screen when loafing the same .mp4

also unable to close mplayer with (X) button,
need to close via task manager => kill

attempting to open .mp4 file with xine results in:

@localhost ~]$ xine
This is xine (X11 gui) - a free video player v0.99.9.
(c) 2000-2014 The xine Team.
Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_va_gl.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
vo_vdpau: Can't create vdp device : No vdpau implementation.
xiTK received SIGSEGV signal, RIP.

before this update video player were ok
after this update, no video player will play  .mp4 files

Do you have task-codec-video (tainted) and task-codec-audio (tainted) installed?

Package task-codec-audio-4-9.mga6.tainted.i586 is already installed

update system and xine now behaves- mplayer did not improve

Assinging to XFCE maintainer, because this was only reported for an XFCE-only install.

the following players are affected:

gnomeplayer
mplayer
totem player

the above players have been tested in the following desktops:

LXDE
Mate
Cinnamon

Xine is affected OOTB, but after updating the system, is no longer affected

Added VLC to Cinnamon after updating, loads .mp4 file and plays ok
