This is a backport proposal for artefetcher, a nice tool to fetch videos from the German and French versions of the Arte+7 website. It serves a similar purpose as qarte, but has the advantage of not breaking at each website change unlike qarte ;) Some of its features are better, others aren't, but several French users are already using my home-brewed package on mga5: http://remi.verschelde.fr/files/packages/mga5/artefetcher-0.7.0-1.mga5.x86_64.rpm RPM in core/backports_testing: ============================== artefetcher-0.7.0-1.mga5 SRPM in core/backports_testing: =============================== artefetcher-0.7.0-1.mga5 Testing procedure should be similar to testing qarte (so it likely needs a tester which resides in a country where Arte is broadcasted, I guess at least France, Germany (and Belgium?)).
Installed this on x86_64. It appears in the menu as "Arte Fetcher" and can be run from the command line as arteFetcher. In the UK selecting Arte in the gui provided a choice of six videos. Currently downloading "La Maison aux esprits" at 4.5 mB/s. Most of the labelling is in English; e.g Stream, Title, Duration, First Broadcast, Available until, ... If this is a result of localization then maybe somebody in other countries does need to test this. Most of the display is in French, as expected. The downloaded video appears in $HOME/arteFetcher as an mp4 file with a text summary and a title image. 1280x720 in vlc. The graphics were perfect but the sound was very poor, patchy and distorted, both the background music and the dubbed speech (a stream of pulse audio overflow output errors). Shall test this on a couple of other machines with different speakers and on a video sans doublé.

Used the configuration option to change the download quality to the lowest and also switched the download directory to $HOME/Videos. Selected subtitles for another video and downloaded that successfully. The sound quality was good but there were interruptions from time to time, when there was no sound at all. The best way to play the video from the interface is to open the download directory (in the gui) and right-click to select a player. The default is totem, which does not seem to work very well here and there is no option for setting a default player, at the moment. There is a button to open the video page in a browser but that seems to do nothing. Possibly something on the todo list. Personal opinion: a clear, well-designed interface which needs only a couple of additions and the sound problems probably have nothing to do with the interface.

Forgot to test the language selection. German is the other choice. Yes, that works.
i586 in virtualbox Mate artefetcher pulls in libqtscript5 from Core Updates, also needed by applications like stellarium, qt-creator, kio and kross. Changed the downloads directory to Videos using the preferences tool. Downloaded a French language film with Spanish subtitles which showed up fine when the film played in vlc. Could not assess sound (bluetooth in vbox anyone?) but pavucontrol registered sound output from vlc. Tentative OK for this.
