Description François Jaouen 2011-06-16 08:09:43 CEST
Description :
System slow to respond because of slow access to the disk due to very often (about each user action) spin down and up.
Configuration :
Mageia 1, x64, gnome
Laptop on battery / Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU T4400 @ 2.20GHz / Western Digital Corp. WD6400BEVT-2 / chipset : Intel 82801I (ICH9 Family) / Memory : 4Go

The problem is described and analysed here :
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpi-support/+bug/59695

Temporary workaround :
# hdparm -B 255 /dev/sda fixes the problem

Severity critical because, it shortens severely the hard disk lifetime.

Assigning to laptop-mode-tools maintainer. I'm not sure about the package, so please assign back to bugsquad@mageia.org if needed.

@ Emmanuel

Please set status to ASSIGNED if you think this bug was assigned correctly. If for work flow reasons you can't do that, then please put OK on the whiteboard instead

If you think we were wrong to assign to you, please assign back and explain

@ tmb

Isn't this a kernel issue?

Hi there,
I have exactly the same problem right now on cauldron, my laptop harddrive spin down every 5secs. If I disable udisks (systemclt --system), then the pb is solved.

Dunno if related or if you want me to open a bug for udisks.

Cheers,
Chris.

I don't know whether it is related either, but because your bug is against cauldron and this one against "1", it should go into a new bug report anyway.

Please come back here to give the bug number of your new report. If the cause turns out to be the same, then this bug should be set to depend on yours, because same bugs always get solved in cauldron first.

Done,
with a more careful investigation, the problem is from upowerd.service and not udisk.

The bug number is 5042

This message is a reminder that Mageia 1 is nearing its end of life.
In approximately 25 days from now, Mageia will stop maintaining and issuing
updates for Mageia 1. At that time this bug will be closed as WONTFIX (EOL) if it
remains open with a Mageia 'version' of '1'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to
fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later
Mageia version prior to Mageia 1's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we may not
be able to fix it before Mageia 1 is end of life. If you would still like to see
this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Mageia,
you are encouraged to click on "Version" and change it against that version
of Mageia.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime,
sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Mageia
release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete.

As it will not likely be solved in 25 days; a fix is also mentioned there:

https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5042#c3

cheers,
chris.

Comment 10 Manuel Hiebel 2012-12-02 14:32:08 CET
Mageia 1 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on ''1st December''. Mageia 1 is no
longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further security or
bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of Mageia
please feel free to click on "Version" change it against that version of Mageia and reopen this bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
