See the upstream bug report, http://bugs.irssi.org/index.php?do=details&task_id=553 Short summary: Accented characters (like é, è, à , ù) are not recognized in bindings. This is probably due to the fact irssi is waiting for a 8 bits char while those are 16+ bits in UTF-8 encoding. irssi developers don't seem to be ready to accept the proposed patch. BTW, it was accepted by debian irssi packagers, though that patch went through several iterations, see here: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=625690 I've been using that patch since it appeared, and it works fine.

I had enough problem with patchs not accepted upstream, so I will not add another one. Once the patch is acknoledged by irssi developpers and the feature integrated and supported upstream for the next release, I will change my mind about adding it.
