Hi Ben Using: ISO Name: Mageia-6-dev1-x86_64-DVD.iso Date.txt: Fri Mar 11 13:49:02 CET 2016 md5sum: 9e3744a77d2dc74e945a7fe4aca6f4b7 Selected Custom instead of KDE or Gnome then after clicking on Graphical Environment, deselected Plasma and selected Gnome. Gdm is installed and Gnome launches as expected. Is that what you did?

XDM likely doesn't support the freedesktop.org xsession files used by KDE, GNOME, etc to start the desktop. This used to work because there was some software to maintain this. XDM doesn't know how to start GNOME and then probably takes some fallback or something.
That software is something distro specific. I didn't change this, so reverting to default assignee. Also forgot who did.
