The graphical login screen itself is ok. If I switch between X, console and X again the KDE screen looks better but only for 1-2 seconds and then it's scrambled again. I'm not sure but it looks like in those 1-2 seconds only a background picture is shown.

I understand you had no problems on the same system when using Mga4, and you did a fresh install instead of an upgrade install?

If so:

There is a small chance that only part of the kernel packages were updated at the end of install. Please try first to go to tty2 with alt+ctrl+F2 when you see the scrambled screen, login as root and type:

   urpmi --auto-update

and when the updates are finished

  reboot

If that doesn't fix the problem, then when you see the scrambled screen please login to tty2 as user and type:

   cp .xsession-errors xsession-errors.txt

then type

   su
(to become root)
and type:

   journalctl -b > journalctl-b.txt

   cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log Xorg.0.log.txt

   cp /root/drakx/report.bug.xz report.bug.xz

then insert a Mga4 LiveDVD or plugin a Mga4 Live USB-stick

reboot into Live mode

grab the above four files from your /home directory and attach them to this bug report.

Thanks :-)

I didn't have Mageia 4. It's a fresh Mageia 5 install that includes updates installer by the Mageia 5 installer before the installation process is finished.

I will attach logs later.

You're currently using nouveau driver which might not completely support your older chipset, hence the garbled display. Boot in runlevel 3, run drakx11 and select nvidia driver as described e.g. in https://wiki.mageia.org/en/How_to_change_a_wrong_graphic_driver (don't select Intel 810 though, simply select the graphics card and it should propose the proprietary driver)
Also described in https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Setup_the_graphical_server

The only appropriate driver that I found and that was already selected is "NVIDIA|GeForce|FX series". No working solution found, as yet.

Maybe there is a newer version of the nouveau driver?

Yes, there's 1.0.12 of x11-driver-video-nouveau available upstream. But it requires a gcc newer then what we have in Mageia 5.

Although if compositing is enabled, you could try to disable than in drakx11 under options. See https://wiki.mageia.org/en/File:GraphicDriver9.jpg - it's the checkbox in the middle.

Assigning to packagers collectively until the culprit is found, so that we can assign to the appropriate packager.

Hi Rotislav Krasny,

Thank you for having taken the needed time to report this issue!

Did this bug get fixed? If so, please change its status to RESOLVED - FIXED

If it didn't, then we regret that we weren't able to fix it in Mageia 5. Mageia 5 has officially reached its End of Life on December 31st, 2017 https://blog.mageia.org/en/2017/11/07/mageia-5-eol-postponed/
It only continued to get important security updates since then, because we are waiting for a big Plasma5 update in Mageia 6, that'll fix many of the Mageia 5 => 6 upgrade issues.

If you haven't seen that this bug got fixed, then please check whether this bug still exists in Mageia 6. If it does, then please change the Version (near the top, at the left) to "6". If you know it exists in Cauldron, then change Version to Cauldron. If you see it in both Cauldron and Mageia 6, then please set Version to Cauldron and add MGA6TOO on the Whiteboard.

Thanks,
Marja

I've switched to a newer hardware and currently can't check the status of the GeForce FX-5500 support in Mageia or in any other Linux system.

Thanks for replying and no problem. I'll just close this report as OLD, then. If someone finds that this issue is still valid in a supported Mageia version, it can be reopened.
