Description Jüri Ivask 2016-01-20 20:42:54 CET
Description of problem: Plasma Desktop system tray has empty space instead of system tray icons - most affected is plasma-pa icon

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): 5.5.3

When Plasma desktop starts the system tray has empty space instead of icons (see attached screenshot). Sometimes there are two missing icons, but mostly only plasma-pa icon is missing. Before last update (qt5.6beta; kf5.18; plasma5.5.3) workaround was to: unselect audio volume item->apply->select audio volume item->apply. However now reselecting the audio volume item->apply causes plasmashell to crash and retrying it once more freezes the desktop.

Upstream bug is at the above URL.

I can confirm the bug too, though I think the KDE bug is badly triaged. From what I could see it's not plasma-pa specific, in my case I was more under the impression that it was triggered by the plugged in devices applet, or maybe by some effect due to the legacy system tray icons support (xembedsniproxy).

Managed to get plasma-pa icon working by starting plasma desktop with it not activated and activating it afterwards.
However, now I still have two empty non-clickable places in system dock.
Killing xembedsniproxy process removes them immediately.
Net-applet is set here not to autostart so maybe some other legacy tray icons...
Removable media applet seems to work OK here.

Yes it's the same for me, that's why I believe the KDE bug is badly triaged as it's filed against the "plasma-pa" component, while it's IMO related to xembedsniproxy. I'll try to add a comment there to mention it.

Only in that case if xembedsniproxy is the reason that plasma-pa icon does not appear at plasma desktop start leaving empty space in system dock... ;)

After update to Plasma 5.6beta at least Plasma5 icons seems to work now OK in system dock. Can we mark it as fixed? xembedproxy related issue is in a separate bug 17592
