Description of problem: The window to select which profile to use at start of thunderbird, when thus configured, is not translated. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): How reproducible: Steps to Reproduce: 1. Launch thunderbird -profilemanager 2. define a new profile and quit 3. Launch thunderbird. The profile manager window is displayed, but not translated. Reproducible: Steps to Reproduce:
I didn't even know the profilemanager still existed. Nice to learn :-) Maybe related issues (to the non-localized profilemanager window Yves reported): 1. With thunderbird-de, thunderbird-fr, thunderbird-nl installed, I don't manage to get any thing else than the English profile manager or an English thunderbird (when started from cli) with: LANGUAGE=fr thunderbird -ProfileManager LANGUAGE=fr thunderbird LANGUAGE=de thunderbird -ProfileManager LANGUAGE=de thunderbird LANGUAGE=nl thunderbird -ProfileManager LANGUAGE=nl thunderbird Should that work at all? 2. The Quick Locale Switcher Add-on works great to change the spell checker, but it doesn't change the interface to the new language as it should, not even after closing and restarting TB This was all in Mga5, haven't tried in cauldron

Thanks for the report, I can reproduce and will take a look. But from what I vaguely remember ( it's been ages since I last used profile manager on linux, usually always edited the profile config :) ). But this problem also appears with the upstream binaries, so there's not much we can do about it, I'll try to report it upstream. @Yves: Can you remember when this dialog was shown in the correct language, which thunderbird version?

Forgot the other half of the sentence ^^ (In reply to Florian Hubold from comment #2) > But from what I vaguely remember ( it's been ages since I last used profile manager on linux, usually always edited the profile config :) ) this dialog has always been shown in english.

Thanks FLorian for reporting. I'm using profile manager only for some months, and I always see it in English. I can accommodate with that, but there is no reason that some parts of the software is not translated. I decided to report it with problem of calendar translation, but it is independent.

This is still valid in Mageia 6.

This is also the case for Firefox. With the Firefox release from Mozilla, the dialog window is translated. Thus I presume that the problem is specific to Mageia. I remove the word "Upstream".

This is still valid in Mageia 7 for thunderbird and Firefox. Thunderbird loaded from mozilla site displays this dialog bax in localized language. This should be a packaging problem.

Hi, I did some tests with thunderbird from upstream and here are the results: 1) If I get the version of thunderbird that is nativelly built in French, the profile manager is correctly localized. 2) If I get the version of thunderbird that is nativelly built in English and I add the French XPI, thunderbird is in French but the profile manager is in English. So, the problem seem to be also upstream. Maybe we need to set some variable in the config to force the profile manager to use the l01n XPI but I cannot find any clue about that. Best regards, Nico.
Hi Nico, thanks for your tests. I have reported your comments upstream.
Upstream has closed RESOLVED INVALID. Seems this is a packager issue but time and disk space! - Can we have time to build every Thunderbird and Firefox with each language it support? I don't think so.

Hello Aurélien, There is no need to build Thunderbird against each language. Upstream provides only one binary. This is not a problem of time or space consumed.

Sadly, upstream comment is: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1236813 "Of course. Language pack is not loaded until AFTER the profile manager is gone". Our packages are built in English and language packs deliver appropriated translations. In facts, language packs are viewed by Thunderbird/Firefox as extensions that user reclaims and their usage is saved in profiles. If you want to select a particular profile, UI is in English with our packages because lang is loaded after parsing user profile. (To paraphrase) So, as pre-build binaries from upstream are built with translations, that's why profile-manager uses correct language from an end-user perspective. Meanwhile, I still think firefox/thunderbird SHOULD use env variables to choose locale and not rely on user selected extension XPI or translations "hardcoded" at build time. If system's locale is French/Spanish/Deutsch and no English, these binaries should use correct locale from XPI available. This IS an upstream issue. This is an upstream issue to provide a clear and documented setting to choose language. This is like a chicken or egg problem: who comes first? What I would like to say in Comment 12 is that we cannot provide as many as firefox/thunderbird translated built-in packages for as many as language a translation is provided like upstream does: we don't have time and disk space for this. This is sadly Linux-specific as other systems are not affected as end-users download firefox/thunderbird from mozilla.org site. So, we can leave this in Bugsquad for now and attemp to knock upstream to provide a good enough solution or Close this WONTFIX.
