Description of problem: Mageia 1 Alpha1 use rpm 4.6.1 release but the latest stable version is 4.8.1. rpm 4.8.1 is on svn, we are reviewing the patches and then we will push. mgarepo need to be ported to new python api. Btw we don't need rpm5 this is not a new version of rpm, this is a completly different project.

A lot of work for this update. > Btw we don't need rpm5 this is not a new version of rpm, this is a completly > different project. OK, then no compatibility for Mageia in the future with post Mandriva 2010.2's packages. Maybe it is better for us to use rpm-4.x source code with Fedora and OpenSUSE than rpm5-5.x with Mandriva.
(FWIW such update-this-package bug reports are of no use, especially when you're talking about core packages that no one would miss).
Before each release, previously with Mandriva and now with Mageia, I go to the URL http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=mageia and refresh the web page to show all the version number used in 211 packages. Then I check if the Linux distribution use the latest/or a recent release number. Less than 6 months/one year if it is not the latest release number for the package and after this check I check the release number package used in other linux distributions with again distrowatch. I check other linux distribution because some times other Linux distribution use a more newer package and debug a lot these packages for us :) . Maybe this tasks can be added in Mageia Developper Team tasks for packages update that must be done before the first beta or first release candidate release for the core packages.
Package maintainers, especially core packages, already have other ways of getting notifications of newer versions of their packages (e.g. http://youri.zarb.org/demo/mandriva/updates.html , my bet is we'll get one for Mageia too). Also package maintainers are subscribed to upstream mailing lists... etc. Such update-package-foo-to-new-version reports are valid for more obscure packages, but certainly not core ones...
rpm 4.8.1 is now on cauldron. This will be the rpm version of mageia 1 as rpm 4.9 is still in beta and it will too many changes like filetriggers support, ... rpm 4.9 or 4.10 will be uploaded in mageia cauldron as soon as mageia 1 will be released.
