Description of problem:I attempted to upgrade using urpmi my mageia4 64bits to mageia5 64, following method proposed on the site mageia:
sudo urpmi.removemedia -a
sudo urpmi.addmedia --distrib --mirrorlist 'http://mirrors.mageia.org/api/mageia.5.x86_64.list' 
sudo urpmi --replacefiles --auto-update --auto

1.open a terminal and make:
sudo urpmi.removemedia -a
sudo urpmi.addmedia --distrib --mirrorlist 'http://mirrors.mageia.org/api/mageia.5.x86_64.list' 
sudo urpmi --replacefiles --auto-update --auto
2.watch the result on the terminal
3.watch in real time the content of /boot directory

I have successfully updated mageia4 with mgaapplet
I think that /boot directory was fullfilled with old initrd-xxx.mga[23]
because  old packages from ancient mageia versions were left on my system

Thanks for the explanations. It's still strange though that it generates old initrd for kernels that are no longer installed according to your "rpm -qa | grep mga[23]".

and what have I to do with these old packages? may I safely discard them?

Yes you can remove them without any issue, unless you are using a soft that you built yourself under mga2 or mga3 and that links against some of those libraries.
