Comment 2 Samuel Verschelde 2015-06-23 10:13:33 CEST
Could be missing dependencies maybe.

There's no indication so far that this is a Mageia bug. I'd suggest either to try our forums or VMWare one's or both.

I can't help more, I never use VMWare, only VirtualBox which works out of the box.

Comment 3 Jan Pihlgren 2015-06-23 11:51:36 CEST
I think you are wrong because this start happends when Mageia begun with systemd.
After that there has been problem starting VMware.

VirtuaBox and VMware works different.
Comment 4 Samuel Verschelde 2015-06-23 11:56:34 CEST
I was not saying they are the same, I'm just saying that Virtualbox is supported, VMWare is not, since it's a closed source software that we don't provide in our repositories.

However, there's probably people who manage to make it work, that's why I suggest you contact forums.

Either it's a bug in Mageia, or it's an bug in VMWare. I can't tell.

since pretty much everyone is heading to systemd, I guess vmware has some work to do then ...

> VirtuaBox and VMware works different.

So... we still cant fix vmware since we dont have the code...

And looking above in the logs I see atleast:

jun 23 07:16:27 Humlan.localdomain vmware[20281]: Virtual ethernet[ FEL

so the network is failing ... so I guess you had some build errors during install...

A quick googling shows there is a vmware patch needed for 3.19 series kernels...

Comment 6 Paul Blackburn 2015-06-23 12:28:42 CEST
Recommend using the most up-to-date version of VMware now version 11.1.0.

I have been using VMware workstation on Mageia for some years and every working day (because I need to run Windoze for work).

For me, vmware does not start as a systemd service, it starts when I invoke "vmware" command (which loads drivers needed).

Some hints and tips I found: on older releases of Vmware workstation there could be problems with the installer not working as a GUI installer. My work-around is to "unset DISPLAY" before running the installer script so it does a non-gui install.

The host guest file system (HGFS) does not work without patching the HGFS driver source. I plan to write up the details for this in the wiki. I found some clues about this here: https://communities.vmware.com/thread/499503

HGFS is working for me on mga4 with VMware workstation 11.1.0.

I am not able to try VMware on mga5 yet (because my mga5 system does not have enough resources). I plan to upgrade my main system to mga5 real soon now and can check vmware then.

Comment 7 Jan Pihlgren 2015-06-23 15:06:15 CEST
I thank Thomas Backlund for his info about patch which made it possible to start vmware.
But building vmnet1 and wmnet8 faild so no connection to internet.
Until I return home I can use this then I will only use VirtualBox even it is
slower.
Thanks Thomas
Comment 8 Florian Hubold 2015-10-04 17:05:03 CEST
Closing as this is not a Mageia bug and VMware workstation is working for others, see e.g. comment 6
