Description of problem: At the boot menu of liveDVD, the "boot from hard disk" option always failed with following error: Booting from local disk... Boot failed: press a key to retry... Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): Mageia-5-RC-LiveDVD-KDE4-i586-DVD.iso How reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.use liveDVD iso as DVD drive in virtualbox. 2.boot up guest vm that have a working os on virtual hard disk. 3.at boot menu, select "Boot from Hard Disk" Reproducible: Steps to Reproduce:
Is that a Mageia install?

Changing the summary, since this is only about the "boot from hard disk" option in the boot menu (comment 0 makes it clear, but the summary was a bit evasive). IIRC this "boot from hard disk" option as always been broken on: - boot from USB - boot in a VM (at least VirtualBox) And it works fine when booting from a burned DVD.
Summary: liveDVD boot from hard disk failed => liveDVD boot from hard disk option does not work in VM or from USB
Answer Thierry's question, yes the virtualbox guest vm is a Mageia install.

Please see if the following description is OK for errata: * The "Boot from Hard Disk" option in the boot menu of live media will not work if the live media is booted in a virtualbox guest or the live media is dumped into USB flash device.
Looks good to me :)
OK. It's on errata now. I also modified "Kernel option selection" to "Boot option selection" so this issue can be covered.

Bug 18392 describes the same issue with classical installer ISOs, can someone from the iso building team confirm whether it would be a duplicate, or if those are similar bugs with potential different causes?
They aren't identical. The isolinux.cfg entry on the CI ISOs is: label harddisk com32 chain.c32 hd0 exit and on the Live ISOs is: label harddisk localboot 0x80 As my reading of the two bug reports is that booting from real DVD works with the CI ISOs and doesn't work with the Live ISOs, I could change the configuration on the Live ISOs to match the CI ISOs. I can't easily test this though, as all my hardware is UEFI/GPT. However, my reading of the bug reports is that it has never worked for either type of ISO in VirtualBox or when booting from a USB stick. Given that we would still have something that only partially worked, I'll ask the question, how useful is this feature? Would anyone care if we just removed this option from the menu?

(In reply to Martin Whitaker from comment #12) > Would anyone care if we just removed > this option from the menu? Maybe it's only there for users who forgot to remove the DVD or USB key after installation and feel trapped when they find themselves in its boot menu again, when there's no obvious way out. CC'ing doktor5000, who'll know whether (many?) forums users reported panicking when the "boot from HD" option didn't work.

OK, I've tried changing the harddisk entry in the Live ISO isolinux.cfg file to match the one on the CI ISO, and it works in VirtualBox. Obvious limitations are going to be: - it will only look at the first hard disk in the system - that disk must be bootable from the MBR The reason that it doesn't work when booted from a USB stick is that then the USB stick is hd0 and the first local disk is hd1. I can't see any way to handle this without creating two different ISO images. So the question remains, do we want something that only works when booting from DVD, or should we remove this option from the boot menu?
I'm for removing it. If we learn that many users need an easy way out, then we can consider adding a "remove your mageia DVD or USB-key and reboot" menu entry for Mageia 7

We've got more critical bugs to fix, let's just remove the feature altogether for now.

I agree. If I need to rebuild the 5.1 ISOs for other reasons (and if nobody objects), I'll remove it on them too.

Changing the summary now that the non-working option has been removed from both 5.1 and cauldron Live isos. If anyone thinks it's too confusing to keep this bug report for re-adding the option when it works, then I'll open a new one.
