Description of problem: Nail fails to provide an /etc/alternatives entry for sendmail-command Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): Every verion to current version How reproducible: Install nail-12.4-12.mga5 (I believe as part of base packages) Steps to Reproduce: 1. update-alternatives --config sendmail-command 2. command produces no response; no entry for /bin/mail 3. See above link for a workaround. For desktop systems and minimal servers that need mail notification, /bin/mail will suffice nicely, but apps hardcoded to use the sendmail command will not detect it or use it as long as it does not appear in /etc/alternatives. @ Hoyt Sorry for the very late reply. BugSquad is short on active members. Is this bug still valid? Assigning to all packagers collectively, since there is no registered maintainer for this package.

Last I checked, one must manually create the link in /etc/alternatives.

Bug still valid for Mageia6.
To assist anyone searching for this issue, I'll leave this link for a HOWTO to manually fix the /etc/alternatives issue for /bin/mail, since it has been removed from above. http://maximumhoyt.blogspot.com/2010/06/managing-etcalternatives.html And this link to configure /etc/nail.rc to enable Gmail for sending system reports. http://maximumhoyt.blogspot.com/2008/11/nail-mailx-and-gmail.html

As of the Mageia6 release, 1. /etc/alternatives will not allow /bin/mail as a valid alternative for sendmail-command 2. It appears as if postfix is installed by default. Not only is this bug report still valid, the situation has gotten worse.
Bug still valid for Mageia7.

es, this is still valid. Here is the current error message on Mageia7: # update-alternatives --install /etc/alternatives/sendmail-command sendmail-command /bin/mail 1 the primary link for sendmail-command must be /usr/sbin/sendmail I suppose that I could install sendmail and then ignore it, but I have no need to install sendmail just to enforce someone's arbitrary decision to make it mandatory.
Mageia 7 is EOL since July 1st 2021. There will not have any further bugfix for this release. You are encouraged to upgrade to Mageia 8 as soon as possible. @reporter, if this bug still apply with Mageia 8, please let us know it. @packager, if you work on the Mageia 7 version of your package, please check the Mageia 8 package if issue is also present. In this case, please fix the Mageia 8 version instead. This bug report will be closed OLD if there is no further notice within 1st September 2021.
Hi bug reporter and hi assignee and others involved, Please reopen this bug report if it is still valid for Mageia 8 or 9(cauldron), and change "Version:" in the upper left of this report accordingly. This report is being closed as OLD because it was filed against Mageia 7, for which support ended on June 30th 2021. Thanks, Marja
