Description of problem: The package fonts-ttf-liberation is not installed automatically by default when installing Mageia. And it is a problem because fonts-ttf-liberation are the best free fonts to replace commonly used Microsoft Windows Fontsâ. The Liberation Fonts are intended to be replacements for the three most commonly used fonts on Microsoft systems: Times New Roman, Arial, and Courier New. These font have a better readability than other ttf fonts : bitstream-vera and dejavu Can you install this package automatically when installing Mageia Linux distribution ? Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): fonts-ttf-liberation-1.06.0-4.mga1 Reproducible: Steps to Reproduce:

I don't agree, I prefer DejaVu fonts. I think a sort of a poll should be conducted and the font preferred by the most users could be the default?
@Ahmad Which language do you use by dfault on your Mageia system ? I think : 1) Liberation fonts must be installed by default on Mageia system. 2) We need to have the same fonts used / configured by default in Mageia system than Mandriva have in 2010.2.

Good point, and liberation fonts were usually installed in Mandriva, but were missed in Mageia Alpha1, I think they should be on the ISO's. > 2) We need to have the same fonts used / configured by default in Mageia system > than Mandriva have in 2010.2. The default in Mandriva has always been DejaVu fonts, in all DE's. This is done via the fonts alias system devised by Frederic Corzat, it sort of maps: Sans to "DejaVu Sans" Sans Serif to "DejaVu Sans Serif" Monospace to "DejaVu Sans Mono" IIUC. If DejaVu fonts aren't available Liberation fonts are used.
I vote for Liberation. The problem it is nt with english but with other languages. https://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=48346 At least if they are not the default option to be installed by default in the system as second choice

Maybe a problem with FreeType packaging https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=175
(In reply to comment #6) > Maybe a problem with FreeType packaging > https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=175 No it's not. The bytecode interpreter is enabled by default in freetype2 since 2.4, this is an upstream change as the bytecode interpreter patents expired http://freetype.org/patents.html . I don't think this is related to DejaVu vs. Liberation fonts.
I also prefer deja vu fonts, which I find much more readable. It makes sense to include liberation, for those who prefer it. (As well, some applications use liberation by default.)
