Description Pierre Bonneau 2011-06-05 12:29:19 CEST
Today, I got the syndaemon to use 100% of one of my CPU. It's the second time it happens.

I don't know for now how to reproduce it.
I got this error after an update from mandriva, and also after a new install of mageia.
Comment 1 Pierre Bonneau 2011-06-11 00:37:36 CEST
Hi,

I got this error again today, it's the fourtyh time.
It happens always when I'm not here.

The problem is that there is 2 cases :
 - If my ACPI is correctly loaded, my processor goes to 86 ° until I stop syndaemon.
 - If the ACPI doesn't work, the processors goes up to 100°(because the fan speed is not change by linux)

It's a level where I can damage my computer, so I put critical.
I would be happy to help you if you have any question or need to see what happen.

Severity: normal => critical

Comment 2 Oliver Burger 2011-06-18 12:28:26 CEST
Having the same thing here.

syndaemon uses up to 100% of my CPU, the temperature going up to about 80°.

The only solution I found is killing syndaemon completely.

Everyone running KDE?
It hit me twice today. Maybe all of the commenters should look in systemsettings if there are any settings for Input Devices -> Touchpad, particularly "Disable when typing".

Hi,

this checkbox is enable on my side.

When I disable it, syndaemon is not active. When I enable it again, syndaemon is back.

Do you know a better way to resolve this issue in place of just disabling the function ?
Is it possible to update syndaemon ?
Comment 5 Pierre Bonneau 2011-06-29 22:02:34 CEST
same issue on gnome in other distribution :

Comment 6 Florian Hubold 2011-06-29 22:03:40 CEST
Well,
at least for me this worked under Mandriva with this checkbox activated.
And a better way is to have a hardware switch for the touchpad, like i have, too. ;) But this is no proper solution.
Somebody who is more into X should try to debug this one, seems it can be fairly easy reproduced. Activate said checkbox, and wait till your fan makes alarming sounds :(
Comment 7 Florian Hubold 2011-06-29 22:07:13 CEST
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31921#c10
has a patch for syndaemon, at least workarounding the problem, which seems better than nothing.
Comment 8 Pierre Bonneau 2011-06-29 22:09:32 CEST
And do not forget to put your computer in a room with air conditionner if you don't want to see your CPU at 100° if your fan speed is not well supported in mageia like me... (or put your system in sleep mode before to prevent that)

Assigning to maintainer now that our maintainer's database has an entry for
this package. Please assign back to bugsquad@mageia.org in case of a mistake
from me.

There is a patch workarounding the problem according to comment #7

Ping ?
Comment 11 Florian Hubold 2011-11-10 09:06:24 CET
FWIW, i've applied this locally and currently testing it, seems to fix the issue. Already mailed Thierry how to proceed.
Comment 12 Florian Hubold 2011-11-14 19:43:41 CET
Can somebody check if this is also valid for cauldron, please?
Comment 13 Oliver Burger 2011-11-15 10:40:25 CET
The "deactivate touchpad while typing" is working without problems on cauldron.
syndeamon does not do any peculiarities.
Comment 14 Pierre Bonneau 2011-11-16 16:17:41 CET
I'm on cauldron now, I will test it next days. i enabled the function again.
Comment 15 Florian Hubold 2011-11-16 16:43:03 CET
For cauldron it should be actually fixed since more than two months ago.
Applied the fix for mageia 1 , awaiting review. Update should be available soon.

There is now x11-driver-input-synaptics-1.4.0-2.1.mga1 in core/updates_testing to validate
-------------------------------------------------------

Suggested advisory:
-------------------
This update addresses the following problem:

syndaemon uses 100% cpu in particular when enabling the setting "Disable when typing" for the touchpad under KDE, which starts sysdaemon. This has now been fixed.

-------------------------------------------------------
Steps to reproduce:

- install/update to update candidate
- enable "Disable when typing" setting in Input Devices -> Touchpad via systemsettings, watch processor usage afterwards

Testing i586.

I have just enabled the setting but it is not happening just yet. I will give it some time and then check with the updated package. Unable to test this x86_64 though.
Comment 19 claire robinson 2011-12-05 12:25:00 CET
Syndaemon did max out after about half an hour or so, shortly after logging out and back in again.

Installed the update candidate and so far so good. If it hasn't happened again by tomorrow then I think this is OK i586.

We are short of hardware again in QA to test x86_64.
Comment 20 José Jorge 2011-12-05 21:30:40 CET
I'd like to help on x86_64 but could not find Input Devices -> Touchpad in my systemsettings.

How to know if I have a synaptics touchpad?

Do you have the package kcm_touchpad installed?

Ah yes, it missed. Now I could check the option. Now what : should I wait for a 100% cpu (the bug was only reported against i586), or just ensure the updated package works.
Comment 23 claire robinson 2011-12-05 23:31:55 CET
It's better to wait and see if you get the 100% CPU José.

It happened to me after about half an hour. I'm not sure what triggered it.

If it doesn't happen to you after a reasonable time, say 24hrs, then just ensure the update works as expected.

Thanks for helping out!
Comment 24 claire robinson 2011-12-06 12:55:16 CET
I've not had any recurrence of the 100% CPU since the update and it works as it should i586.
Comment 25 claire robinson 2011-12-08 13:18:48 CET
José, how did you get on with this please?
Comment 26 José Jorge 2011-12-08 17:24:08 CET
I installed the testing package for two days, no problems. So it is validated on x86_64.
Comment 27 claire robinson 2011-12-08 17:31:39 CET
Thanks José. I added you to CC for another similar one, hope you don't mind.
