Description Richard Walker 2015-05-18 03:00:56 CEST
Description of problem:
The program does not start when the menu entry at menu://applications/Internet is used. The program will start from LXterminal and prompt for a root password. Watching the journal output while trying to use the menu entry reveals that there is something preventing etherape from displaying a password entry prompt:

May 18 01:48:05 localhost userhelper[27792]: pam_tcb(etherape:auth): conversation failed
May 18 01:48:05 localhost userhelper[27792]: pam_tcb(etherape:auth): Unable to obtain a password

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

How reproducible:

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Boot MGA5 to LXDE desktop
2.Select Internet->EtherApe from the taskbar menu
3.wait forever for the program to start

Reproducible:

Summary: Program does not start from the desktop menu in LXDE => etherape does not start from the desktop menu in LXDE

Comment 1 Rémi Verschelde 2015-05-18 09:06:43 CEST
Confirmed on Mageia 5 with KDE4, so it's not desktop-dependent.

Summary: etherape does not start from the desktop menu in LXDE => etherape does not start from the desktop menu

Comment 2 Samuel Verschelde 2015-05-18 09:15:23 CEST
Also true in Mageia 4.

Upstream should convert this to use polkit instead of usermode like we did with our drakxtools. I guess there's something you could put in /etc/security/console.apps/etherape that would bypass it asking for a password. It's strange that this isn't working though.

Can't we simply replace the usermode setup with a call to pkexec and submit that patch upstream?

Closing this due to irrelevance in 2018
