+++ This bug was initially created as a clone of Bug #12348 +++ cloning, because that report already has 50 comments (Also, that one was originally only about this issue for Turkish installs, and for Turkish it got fixed.) After Mageia 6 release, we'll probably need many more comments, figuring out for which languages the keyboard layout choice should remain hidden until the summary. Even for languages that can only be typed with a keyboard for that specific language, we have to make sure there is no dvorak or other alternate layout nowadays. We should maybe ask our translators.
And, as a reminder for those getting this bug: http://doc.mageia.org/installer/4/en/content/selectLanguage.html "If your keyboard language is not the same as your preferred language, then it is advisable to install the language of your keyboard as well." Installing the language your keyboard was meant for, will in that case make the Keyboard choice screen appear.
Target Milestone: --- => Mageia 6
Just making the first keyboard choice screen visible is easy. However, I got trapped: * I still do not know for which languages that should *not* be done except ** Funda Wang did not want the screen to appear for zh_CN in Mandriva times ** Yuri Chornoivan seems to think it shouldn't appear for Ukrainian *** However, /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/ua has more than one keyboard for Ukrainian * Also, when it does appear for a language, it would be nice to have all possible keyboards for that language selectable. There seem to be many more keyboards nowadays than drakx-kbd-mouse-x11 knows about (including even Dutch "ij/IJ" and Breton "c'h/C'H" ones). I know way too little and haven't managed to find the needed information to fix that. I do no longer have time to continue my bad Google searches and read mostly unhelpful information @ Pablo If you read this: Can you please direct me to the information I should know? You can safely assume that I don't know anything, yet

@ Florian Do you ever see complaints from users in the forums, about the first keyboard choice screen being skipped during install? Given the fact that at least for simplified Chinese and Ukrainian our most important contributors do not want the first keyboard choice screen to appear and given the fact that being asked to choose a keyboard can be very confusing (see https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Feature:Simplified_installation#Detailed_Description ) I suggest to not offer the first keyboard choice screen for all languages, not even if, like for Ukrainian, three keyboards are available: I think we should only add this first screen for languages about which we receive a complaint about the missing screen.

(In reply to Marja van Waes from comment #2) > > I do no longer have time to continue my bad Google searches and read mostly > unhelpful information > I'll refrain from Google searches :-þ However, I am collecting other useful information on this page: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/DrakX_and_keyboards feel free to improve it :-)
(In reply to Marja van Waes from comment #3) > @ Florian > > Do you ever see complaints from users in the forums, about the first > keyboard choice screen being skipped during install? Nope. Only about the fact if you select one from the "More" section that it will not be shown. I think that is already known but I could not find an open bug for it. It's not obvious to users that their chosen selection is not reflected in the dialog, but will still be chosen and working. Basically you have only two major choices IMHO: 1. select one of the offered US keyboard models 2. select a custom keyboard layout - from the "More" list (this is probably what most people will use)

It's bug 1042 > It's not obvious to users that their chosen selection is > not reflected in the dialog, but will still be chosen and working. Indeed. The help informs them correctly, though > > Basically you have only two major choices IMHO: > 1. select one of the offered US keyboard models s/US// ;-) the offered keyboard layouts are the ones for the selected language(s), see e.g.: http://docteam.mageia.nl/de/installer/content/images/dx2-selectKeyboard.png > 2. select a custom keyboard layout - from the "More" list (this is probably > what most people will use) I'm commenting in bug 1042
Mageia Tools maintainer group and marja: marja did try to solve this bug in the past and can surely give useful information to anybody willing to fix this bug in the installer. Either that or we need to change the Milestone to a later version of Mageia.

@ Stormi The problem is not that it is hard to make that screen visible for all languages. The problem is, that I learnt that for some languages important contributors who have that language as mother tongue (like Funda for Chinese or Yurchor for Ukrainian), don't want the "select keyboard" screen to appear at the beginning of install. Without that knowledge, I would have made it visible for all languages. I cannot guess or decide for which languages it would be better to see that screen, and for which languages it's better to keep hiding it, so I'm just waiting for feedback from contributors or users who are not happy with it being skipped.
Target Milestone: Mageia 6 => Mageia 7
Hi, This is High priority bug for a good reason. Making Mageia even better than ever is best direction. In order to do right thing, this bug should be examined and fixed as soon as possible. Packagers, please make the status to Assigned when you are working on this. Feel free to reassign the bug if bad-triaged. Also, if bug is old, please close it. On October 1st 2020, we will drop priority to normal.
As there is no more people reporting this it seem not very important. Also per comment 8 it is hard to decide what languages actually want this. Pushing target one step to Mageia 8, but think it will slip.
