Description Theodoros Kalamatianos 2015-03-31 18:59:07 CEST
Description of problem:

On my x86_64 system (i7-3770), gnome-calculator is unable to compute the natural logarithm of 0.5 when in advanced mode. ln0.5 results in an error:

*** ERROR OCCURRED IN LNS, NEWTON ITERATION NOT CONVERGING PROPERLY ***

It could be some sort of bug w.r.t. the convergence checks in gnome-calculator's Newton-Raphson implementation - or it could be something more insidious. No other tool that I have tried, including an actual scientific calculator has any trouble computing what seems to me a perfectly fine logarithm.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

gnome-calculator-3.14.1-1.mga5

How reproducible:

Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start gnome-calculator
2. Click on the top button and switch to advanced mode
3. Type `ln0.5' and press Enter, or use the mouse on the virtual keypad

An interesting point:

The gnome-calculator binary from the Mageia 4 gnome-calculator-3.10.2-1.mga4.x86_64 package works fine on the same system. Seems like we have a regression from version 3.10.

Still happens in latest Mageia 5 x86-64. Adding the right tags.

This issue seems to have been fixed in gnome-calculator-3.20.1-1.mga6.

Yes, it seems to be ok. Marking as Mageia v5 only.

Hi Theodoros,

Thank you for having taken the needed time to report this issue!

We regret if this issue didn't get fixed in Mageia 5.

Mageia 5 has officially reached its End of Life on December 31st, 2017 https://blog.mageia.org/en/2017/11/07/mageia-5-eol-postponed/
It only continued to get important security updates since then, but non-security bugs have no chance of still getting fixed.

Closing as OLD.
