Description of problem: ( From overview of the package ) The luks-tools package contains various utilities for working with LUKS-protected filesystems. HAL uses these utilities to automatically mount encrypted volumes when they are attached to a system, provided the user can produce the correct passphrase. These utilities are written as separate programs to allow MAC systems like SELinux to have fine-grained control over them. luks-format A utility that formats a filesystem to contain a LUKS encryption header. luks-is-encrypted A tool that can determine if a filesystem contains a LUKS encryption header. luks-setup A utility that sets up the dm-crypt device map for a partition. gnome-luks-format A GNOME front-end for luks-format.

With the exception of the gui front end, all of the luks commands are available as subcommands of cryptsetup I've downloaded luks-tools-0.0.9.tar.gz (the most recent version, and the files are all dated 2006 Looks like this is a dead project, from before the luks commands were all merged into cryptsetup. For a description of how to use the cryptsetup luks commands, see http://www.ody.ca/~dwhodgins/Luks-Howto.html Also, if you use diskdrake to create an encrypted filesystem, it will use cryptsetup luksformat, to created the encrypted container, then create the filesystem setup for mounting at boot time.
