Description nouguey christophe 2014-12-17 18:36:53 CET
Description of problem:
when I click on "quit" then stop or reboot, my computer can't stop.
I am obliged to push the button "reset" and then stop it electrically, or I need to go "console" and do " systemctl poweroff" to stop the computer

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

How reproducible:

Steps to Reproduce:
1.every time I want to stop it
2.
3.

Comment 1 Barry Jackson 2014-12-17 20:42:04 CET
I confirm seeing this "sometimes" but certainly not always. I have not managed to find a reliable way to reproduce.

BTW Don't just reset/power off, better to log into a tty and shut down from there.
i.e.:
CTRL/ALT/F2
login as root
shutdown now

Comment 2 nouguey christophe 2015-01-07 20:21:33 CET
Dear,
since the 17/12, It is absolutly IMPOSSIBLE to shut down normally my computer !
The only way is to open a console and type : systemctl poweroff

absolutly impossible, and it is not the first time.
I had two times this problem 2 and 1 year ago, I was obliged to reinstall mageia.

it is impossible to restart my computer too with the normal icon !

it is a bug, and I know that I am not the only personn to have this problem. Perhaps because I have a nvidia graphic card with the nvidia pilot ?

Status: NEW => REOPENED

Comment 3 claire robinson 2015-01-08 10:36:53 CET
What happens when you try to shutdown from the desktop? Which desktop are you using? The nvidia driver used is the one in Mageia repository or installed yourself from upstream? How long did you leave it before powering off? (any services failing will have a 5 minute timeout)

There could be a number of symptoms and causes, could you give more detail of what happens when you try to shutdown from the desktop.

When the problem occurs, after rebooting once could you attach journal.txt from..
# journal -b -1 > journal.txt

That should be the journal from the last boot only, which should then show what happened.

Thanks

Comment 4 nouguey christophe 2015-01-08 11:02:10 CET
1- I have a nvidia card
a) I used the generic pilot
b) I installed the nvidia pilot after shaking the hardware ( in root ) when mageia asked me the question (do you want to use the nvidia pilot ?)
2- I had an upgrade last month (rpm, drakrpm, etc...)
3- since the upgrade, when I want to shutdown the computer, I click on the icon "arrêter l'ordinateur" (shutdown...)
4- I have a black screen with some informations (I had always these informations)
5- Nothing else happen, even after all a night !
5- I am obliged to do : ctrl + alt + supp to reboot, but not shutdown the computer !
Comment 5 nouguey christophe 2015-01-08 11:03:47 CET
I have 2 monitors
Comment 6 Barry Jackson 2015-01-08 13:21:22 CET
(In reply to claire robinson from comment #3)

> When the problem occurs, after rebooting once could you attach journal.txt
> from..
> # journal -b -1 > journal.txt

... maybe:

su
journalctl -b -1 > journal.txt && chown $USER:$USER journal.txt
exit
Comment 7 nouguey christophe 2015-01-10 17:58:06 CET
# journal -b -l > journal.txt
bash: journal : commande introuvable

it doens't work ...
neighter :

journalctl -b -1 > journal.txt && chown $USER:$USER journal.txt
exit

# journalctl -b -l > journal.txt && chown $USER:$USER journal.tx
d'accéder à « journal.tx »: Aucun fichier ou dossier de ce type
#
Comment 8 nouguey christophe 2015-01-10 18:03:26 CET
where is "journalctl" ? I can't fond it

last year I had a problem with pulseaudio after a kernel upgrade, I was obliged to get it off my computer and reinstall it, perhaps a pb with pulseaudio ?

here is the systemlog

# journalctl -b -l > journal.txt && chown $USER:$USER journal.tx
                                                                ^

You missed a "t" but you should still be able to find journal.txt
Please *attach* it here :)

Hello

I have solved all the problems I had since the last update !

I had all these problems :

1- this bug of course (and I am not the only one with this bug)
2- a problem with dolphin : the folder window was blank, impossible to activate it.
3- a problem with the automatic update (I was obliged to open a console and write : urpmi --auto-update)
4- a problem with firefox, and the addons (adblock was impossible to update, and didn't remember the right list, I was always with the german list opening firefow)
5- a problem with the net, I had a lot of exchanges with google (but I don't know what exactly ... so that google asked me all the day long if I was a robot...and I saw it with etherape)
6- a problem with the reboot function (like the shutdown function...)
7- many problems with my HP printer that was forgotten twice a week !
8- other problems with firefox.
9- problems with ksysguard (there is perhaps a bug in ksysguard. if you open a window : properties for a sensor, like disc access, if you modify the display witout closing the window, or if you delete the sensor display without closing the caracterics display small window, you stop ksysguard immediatly and a have a bug-window opened.)
10- problems with ntp

Before the last update, I changed a screen. I had a philips monitor 16/9 and a belinea one 4/3 with the nvidia graphic card. I bought a second 16/9 philips screen.
the changing was a little complicated... with the pilot and the screen order.
after, there was the mageia upgrade, with glibc, lib64ssh, libsndfile-progs, dkms-nvidia-current, doc, kernel and server, x11 driver video nvidia-current.

I think there was a problem with the nvidia upgrade, it is not the first time I have problems with the non-free pilots. it is quitly impossible to use the generic nv pilot...

So, this morning, I decided to remake mageia (without destroying the /home, off course), now all is perfect, it works normally.

but, there is still a problem, it is not the first time I have problems after an upgrade.

some packages are not well built, for example kile package has a problem. when you want to remove kile, you don't remove /home/xxxxxxx/.kde4/share/apps/kile/
so, it is necessary to remove it manually.

I think that there is a building problem with glib, because I had three times the same problems the last two years with glib upgrade.
perhaps it would be necessary to have best tests with glib in the future.

now, all is right in Paris !

many thanks for all

best regards

christophe

Glad you sorted it - you may wish to submit separate bug reports for any other issues.
It's not normal for package removal to remove anything from user's home folders so that behaviour is correct.

Closing this bug then as invalid (as it's the only suitable option) ;)
