Description JeanBaptiste Lamy 2011-05-30 00:19:50 CEST
When upgrading from Mandriva to Mageia,

Using the Mageia DVD, it is possible to install Mageia, or to upgrade an already installed distribution. In the latter case, the installer still display "Install" in the menu on the left ("Installation" in French ; I'm not sure of the exact tranaslation in English). However this is confusing, and it should rather display "Upgrading" ("Mise à jour" in French).

The installer has always had "Install $distroname $distro-release", even when you were upgrading, i.e. the "upgrade" option is inside the installer, no on the gfxboot (GRUB) menu. That didn't seem to confuse the users all those years in Mandriva...

Yes, it was the same in Mandriva, and people that already know that will not be confused. Personally, I was first confused ("Oh no ! I've choosed install instead of upgrade !") before I reminded that Mandriva was doing so.

However, I still think it is definitively confusing for person new to Mageia / Mandriva. Should we keep all the "unpolished" thing coming from Mandriva or should we improve them ?
Comment 3 Ahmad Samir 2011-05-30 23:36:13 CEST
Please note that:
- I didn't close the report
- I assigned it to the correct RPM package

The problem is it'll take time to rework gfxboot-theme and the installer to have an "Upgrade from a previous release" entry, which will select "Upgrade" directly. Also note that a user may have more than one Linux/Mandriva/Mageia installation, how will that menu entry guess on the fly which installation the user wants to "upgrade"... etc.

I think just changing the wording from "Install" to "Install or upgrade", to
make it clear there will be a choice after selecting that option, should
be enough.

"or upgrade" would be bogus if the user doesn't have a previous Mageia/Mandriva installation..

pinging. because nothing happened to this report since more than 3 months ago, and it still has the status NEW

@ Donald
Please set status to ASSIGNED if you think this bug was assigned correctly. If for work flow reasons you can't do that, then please put OK on the whiteboard instead.

I agree with either "upgrade and install" or an upgrade that is just install with a different name.

I can be the assignee, however, I don't know the technical side to the package to well so if anyone who has experience wants to fix it then please do.

I will check in again when I get back from holidays around the 16th or so.

Hi,

This bug was filed against cauldron, but we do not have cauldron at the moment.

Please report whether this bug is still valid for Mageia 2.

Thanks :)

Cheers,
marja

This is still valid in current cauldron.

If we want to fix something (I'm not convinced that having "Install" in gfxboot is really an issue, but why not), I think the simplest solution is indeed something like "Install (or upgrade to) Mageia X" as proposed by Dave.

WDYT? If we are to fix this bug, let's do it now.

Well it's fine so in my opinions, upgrading with dvd was not something to die one day ?

(Also he was also speaking of the left panel after the boot, where is listed the step)
Comment 11 Lewis Smith 2019-04-23 20:16:57 CEST
I have just discovered this reviewing old bugs, and from personal QA experience, support the spirit of the complaint.
Comments 4, 7, 9 give the obvious solution. Probing this with Martin for M7, it is too late: there are many translations involved, and screenshots in documents to update.
Having watched where the re-wording would matter re the Classic installer:
 The boot menu
The top heading of the LH panel
The detailed Install step of the LH panel
Fortunately, the Mageia version appears in none of these. If the installer finds existing Mageias, it offers simply to upgrade them as it finds them.

FWIW I think the new caption should be the simplest possible: "Install/Upgrade". This is less ambiguous than 'Install or Upgrade' in the LH panel; although that is OK for the boot menu.

This topic is due for discussion & action for Mageia 8.
