Description Florian Hubold 2014-11-19 19:30:52 CET
At https://www.mageia.org/support/ the current requirements state:

Hardware Requirements

[snip]

Storage (HDD): 1GB for a minimal installation, 6GB for a full setup;

1GB should not be recommended for a minimal installation. 5GB should be the absolute minimum that we recommend and support.

And 6GB for a "full" setup - with that partition size, the installation will quickly become full in another meaning of the word.
This should be changed to _at least_ 10GB for casual use, but better would probably be 20GB if people install bigger packages / things like games, which are several GB in size alone.

Quick comparison with Fedora¹ shows they recommend 10GB as a bare minimum, this sounds sane to recommend. It's a much bigger hassle for novice and even intermediate users to repartition and reinstall, or to resize partitions via some life media.

Even Debian² suggests 5GB as minimum size for a desktop install.

Hence I'm suggesting to change this to:

Hardware Requirements

[snip]

Storage (HDD): 5GB for a minimal installation, 20GB for a casual setup;

A hint should also be added, that custom installations are possible, which requires less space but this should only be attented by intermediate users - or something along those lines.

Ahh and it should be added that this is the size only for the root ( / ) partition, not for the overall installation. 5GB for multiple partitions including swap would be a really bad idea.

When we are speaking about minimal size, that imply only one partition and no swap. In this case 5 or 6 GB are enough.
For a full setup, we must consider three partitions but only / and swap can be advised. /home is too different from an user to another one and is about the same for any os (free or not). I think also that some extra place is needed for updates from n to n+1 releases. So, for a casual setup I would say: 15GB + /home
