(In reply to Otto Leipälä from comment #2) > Kernel testing need to be done in real hardware virtualbox are not option in > kernel testing. Testing of kernel updates is critical in both Vbox client and real hardware. Note that vboxadditions-kernel-desktop-latest is part of this update and if this does not work Mageia will not work properly as a Vbox client. I test kernel updates in both Vbox clients and on real hardware. If it don't work in a Vbox client it's very likely not going to work on real hardware. Running a Vbox client inside a Vbox client is not a valid test.

That's not true because vbox don't use real hardware itself it uses wrappers to virtualize hardware,so it's likely kernel work in virtualbox but not in real harware or real hardware but not in vbox.
(In reply to Otto Leipälä from comment #5) > That's not true because vbox don't use real hardware itself it uses wrappers > to virtualize hardware,so it's likely kernel work in virtualbox but not in > real harware or real hardware but not in vbox. vboxadditions-kernel-desktop-latest-4.3.18-2.mga4.i586 vboxadditions-kernel-desktop-latest-4.3.18-2.mga4.x86_64 Are critical parts of this update and must work in a Vbox Client updated with the new kernel. In fact Vbox updates and kernel updates are best tested at the same time. https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14303 Update request: virtualbox-4.3.18-1.mga3/4 Should be tested at the same time that you test kernel updates. I have seen times when updates to the kernel have worked on real hardware but not worked in a Vbox client of the same Mageia/Mandriva OS.
This all get very complexificated when your on a hardware system that features an nvidia frame-buffer, then you install VirtualBox on it and then you install a Vbox client with the same M4 OS. It all should update without any problems, right? I'm hopeing to get through the hardware testing for M4 today. M3 tomorrow.

<MrsB> kernels and anything involving hardware needs to be done on real hardware though So are you still testing kernel in vbox ? you need to start to test it in real hardware like mageia installed to hard drive. Good example why you can't test kernel in vbox is this bug i have desktop freezes what are causing some intel bug in kernel,what cannot be found when it's installed in vbox because it's not using real intel driver. https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14144
The kernel needs to work on a wide range of real hardware but also in a VM, so you are both right. It's important to test on as wide a range of real hardware as we have available, but it's also important to ensure it works in a VM. One or two VM's are generally enough for this. Everybody please test the new kernels work with their hardware without causing regression. A few also please test the kernels work in vbox, new and old.
I added that bug blocks this to be validated until it's tested and fixed.

As this is the bug assigned to QA, it should block the other bugs it also fixes, not the other way around. As for whether this update really depends on that bug, if that one's not a regression, it doesn't need to. It'd be nice to fix it of course.

True, but I understood bug 14144 as a regression induced by the update candidate, that's why I set it as blocking the update.

(In reply to Rémi Verschelde from comment #24) > True, but I understood bug 14144 as a regression induced by the update > candidate, that's why I set it as blocking the update. OK. If that's the case, it'll be fixed (hopefully) along with this update, so this update blocks any potential fix of that bug.
Alright :-)
(In reply to David Walser from comment #23) > As this is the bug assigned to QA, it should block the other bugs it also > fixes, not the other way around. That's a bit counter intuitive. Whatever works though. As long as everything is clearly specified here.
(In reply to claire robinson from comment #27) > (In reply to David Walser from comment #23) > > As this is the bug assigned to QA, it should block the other bugs it also > > fixes, not the other way around. > > That's a bit counter intuitive. Whatever works though. As long as everything > is clearly specified here. That's the way we've always done it, and it makes sense. This is the one that'll be fixed first (when the update is pushed). Then the others can be marked fixed. If those block this, then this can't be fixed until they are (and indeed Colin's script will refuse to push this update), but those bugs can't be fixed on their own, because they're not the update candidate.
So should i remove that blocks from this bug report ?.
(In reply to Otto Leipälä from comment #29) > So should i remove that blocks from this bug report ?. No, I already fixed it.
Advisory: This kernel update is based on upstream -longterm 3.14.22 and fixes the following security issues: The kvm_iommu_map_pages function in virt/kvm/iommu.c in the Linux kernel through 3.16.1 miscalculates the number of pages during the handling of a mapping failure, which allows guest OS users to (1) cause a denial of service (host OS memory corruption) or possibly have unspecified other impact by triggering a large gfn value or (2) cause a denial of service (host OS memory consumption) by triggering a small gfn value that leads to permanently pinned pages (CVE-2014-3601). The assoc_array_gc function in the associative-array implementation in lib/assoc_array.c in the Linux kernel before 3.16.3 does not properly implement garbage collection, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and system crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via multiple "keyctl newring" operations followed by a "keyctl timeout" operation (CVE-2014-3631). The pivot_root implementation in fs/namespace.c in the Linux kernel through 3.17 does not properly interact with certain locations of a chroot directory, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (mount-tree loop) via . (dot) values in both arguments to the pivot_root system call (CVE-2014-7970). The do_umount function in fs/namespace.c in the Linux kernel through 3.17 does not require the CAP_SYS_ADMIN capability for do_remount_sb calls that change the root filesystem to read-only, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (loss of writability) by making certain unshare system calls, clearing the / MNT_LOCKED flag, and making an MNT_FORCE umount system call (CVE-2014-7975). Other fixes: The X86_SYSFB config option has been disabled as it prevents proper KMS setup on some systems (mga#13098) The cpupower default governor has been switched from ondemand to performance as the intel_pstate driver (used on newer Intel cpus) does not support ondemand target. For other fixes included in this update, read the referenced changelogs. (In reply to Otto Leipälä from comment #42) > Now should change this kernel testing to only real hardware I test on both Vbox and real hardware. FWIW the test on hardware involves a new install ( M4.1 ) from a blank drive, then update that install, then install and test Vbox. Even on my fast i7 machine it takes well over an hour to just get to the starting point. It also makes sure that the release under test can successfully install, then update, then update to the kernel under test. An M4.1 new install, then updated, involves well over 500 rpms. IMO it's the only way to make sure this all works.
M4.1 i586 on real hardware later on this evening.

Thomas, when you get a chance, this one needs an updated advisory since the bump to 3.14.23.
Blocks: (none) => 13098
Once the advisory is updated and uploaded, this update (along with the Mageia 3 kernel and virtualbox) can be pushed.
Keywords: (none) => validated_updateCC: (none) => sysadmin-bugs
Updated advisory: This kernel update is based on upstream -longterm 3.14.23 and fixes the following security issues: The kvm_iommu_map_pages function in virt/kvm/iommu.c in the Linux kernel through 3.16.1 miscalculates the number of pages during the handling of a mapping failure, which allows guest OS users to (1) cause a denial of service (host OS memory corruption) or possibly have unspecified other impact by triggering a large gfn value or (2) cause a denial of service (host OS memory consumption) by triggering a small gfn value that leads to permanently pinned pages (CVE-2014-3601). As just reported on our discuss mailing list, one of the sets of nvidia packages was not pushed with this update, and should have been. It was this SRPM and associated RPMS: kmod-nvidia304-304.121-6.mga4.nonfree.src.rpm It was also not listed in the advisory that was e-mailed.
