Description of problem: I'm running on the Mageia 1 Beta 2 KDE4 Live CD system. After doing some operations, e.g., opening apps windows and closing them, or especially, right clicking the mouse on the desktop, then selecting desktop settings (sorry, I can't remember its actual naming), and then clicking on the Cancel button on that associated window, I can see odd artifacts or certain remaining window (it is an app window I have closed) when I choose to shutdown, restart, or logout. (See Attachments 1~6.) The other clues I can provide are: 1. The KDE4 desktop effects are not enabled. (See Attachment 7 [details].) 2. The output of lspcidrake -v | grep -Ei "card|display" is Card:NVIDIA GeForce 6100 to GeForce 360: nVidia Corporation|C61 [GeForce 6150SE nForce 430] [DISPLAY_VGA] (vendor:10de device:03d0 subv:1458 subd:d000) (rev: a2) Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): How reproducible: Everytime I follow the steps described in the Description of problem. Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.

I can confirm similar effects using nvidia173 driver on FX5600u card. No desktop effects enabled here either. There seem to be several issues with recent kernels and nvidia.

The this isn't a problem with the proprietary driver, but with Nouveau, since the proprietary driver isn't available on the Live CD.
No - I see these effects with nvidia in HD install as well.
Created attachment 467 [details] shutdown screen corruption This is with nvidia driver in a fully updated i586 installation using FX5600u card. No desktop effects enabled at all. I also see these artifacts when notifiers pop up from the panel - the corruption fills the space before the pop up fills it - very noticeable with the kde widget chooser as it occupies the whole screen width. The hash/artifact whatever you want to call it is shaped to fit the space that will almost immediately be filled by the emerging notifier or plasmoid. Almost always happens with the yakuake launch notifier which I have set in autostart. Hope that helps. Almost impossible to photograph the fleeting ones but if it helps I could take some video.
I run Mageia 1 RC i586 on a HDD partition, and I tried both drivers. Nvidia driver : x11-driver-video-nvidia-current (version 270.41.19-1.mga1). Nouveau driver: x11-driver-video-nouveau (version 0.0.16-0.20110303.3.mga1). The results on my system are: - Nouveau driver & desktop effects disabled: bug (same as reported by Jin-tong Hu) - Nouveau driver & desktop effects enabled: no problem - Nvidia driver & desktop effects enabled: no problem - Nvidia driver & desktop effects disabled: no problem The output of lspcidrake -v | grep -Ei "card|display" is: Card:NVIDIA GeForce 6100 to GeForce 360: nVidia Corporation|G73 [GeForce 7600 GT] [DISPLAY_VGA] (vendor:10de device:0391 subv:1043 subd:81f7) (rev: a1)

There's a thread about nvidia & kde 4.6 artifact on kde archive http://lists.kde.org/?l=kde&m=130423647302598 Maybe you should try playing with the noflip option for nvidia(aka proprietary driver) users ?

Yes, that is the sort of issue that is going on here. It is as though the memory block for the section of screen about to be used is flipped twice. Once before the new data is written to the background hidden memory displaying garbage, and then again to display the wanted image. As I understand it in simple terms the new image should be written to the hidden block and only flipped once into view when rendering is complete. The thread is confusing as it refers to Option "EnablePageFlip" "boolean" and then at the end says "And yes, I've definitely read that turning no-flip on can help" - I assume by "turning no-flip on" he means turning EnablePageFlip off ! I have added 'Option "EnablePageFlip" "0"' to the device section in xorg.conf and it has made no difference at all. Just out of interest I turned it on - no difference. So, it is either ignored by nvidia or not the problem. :(
More reading indicates that NoFlip is a valid option, so I have tried that as well - Section "Device" Identifier "Videocard0" Driver "nvidia" VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation" BoardName "GeForce FX 5600 Ultra" Option "EnablePageFlip" "0" Option "NoFlip" "1" EndSection Still no difference that I can detect.

i sometimes see similar artifacts on kwin or when locking/unlocking

I am experiencing the same issues - also with a Nvidia Card:NVIDIA GeForce 6100 to GeForce 360: nVidia Corporation|NV44 [GeForce 6200 TurboCache(TM)] [DISPLAY_VGA] (vendor:10de device:0161 subv:1682 subd:2146) (rev: a1) I turned off flipping and will see what happens on my side. For some reason, there was also another monitor written into /root/.nvidia-settings-rc I detected that in the console when I started nvidia-settings a su and it complained about it, so I just removed that monitor from the file.

A lot has changed in cauldron, is the problem still there? If so, can you log in to an other desktop environment (gnome, for instance) and confirm there is no similar problem there?

I have just tried it on the latest Mageia 2 Alpha 1 KDE4 Live CD system, and unfortunately the problem is still there. I didn't downloaded the GNOME version Live CD, so I tried logging in to IceWM instead, but it didn't have logout countdown screen and I didn't find any similar problem. Could anybody help try it out on the GNOME desktop?
I don't have Gnome but can still confirm this issue using the KDE live CD mga2 alpha1 with NVIDIA GeForce 6100 system (laptop) and also with installed alpha1 using NVIDIA FX5600u.
@ John Balcaen Assigning to you :D I'm curious to see which package you'll put in the RPM field of this report Only now I see, that this bug was reported for i586 and no one has shouted "Hey, my 86_64 has got it, too" yet

Well so far the common problem here seems to the used of an nvidia card with desktop effect disable. So a workaround would be to enable desktop effect by default (we're currently disable it by default ) however : -> it's probably going to break with some cards (for example ati when the firmware is not available ) -> upstream disable the autocheck for free drivers in KDE SC 4.5 because some drivers (the proprietary one at least) was not answering as expected We can enable again by default the desktop effect & see how many computers we can break with it (or not) before going on a simple errata to explain how « to fix » this issue. Not to mention we'll switch later to KDE 4.8 with a new kwin so... :o) and last but not least thoses are artefact problem so if you want to assign this bug report to me as a kde package, kwin is the culprit here so you can set kdebase4-workspace. (in my very own personal opinion i think that nvidia is the culprit here but :p )
Source RPM: kde => kdebase4-workspace-4.7.3-5.mga2.src.rpm
LOL Well, of course nvidia causes it, but I bet it'll get solved by upgrading to KDE 4.8 :D
(In reply to comment #25) > Well so far the common problem here seems to the used of an nvidia card with > desktop effect disable. Nope - the point about no desktop effects was to clarify that it does not *ONLY* happen with them enabled - it is the same with and without for me. I don't normally use them at all, but just enabled to test. Also it's not arch specific as I have this in x86_64. > (in my very own personal opinion i think that nvidia is the culprit here but :p > ) I agree. @marja Hmm... we'll see ;)

My motherboard failed several days ago, so I bought a new one with an integrated ATI Radeon⢠HD 4250 GPU. I tried it on the latest Mageia 2 Alpha 1 KDE4 Live CD system and also on the installed system, only to find the problem occurring, too. Any clues?
I forgot to post the output of lspcidrake -v | grep -Ei "card|display" for my new system. It is: Card:ATI Radeon HD 2000 and later (radeon/fglrx): ATI Technologies Inc|RS880 [Radeon HD 4250] [DISPLAY_VGA] (vendor:1002 device:9715 subv:1043 subd:843e)
(In reply to comment #24) > Only now I see, that this bug was reported for i586 and no one has shouted > "Hey, my 86_64 has got it, too" yet Sorry all my test have been in x86_64 so, It's not only i586. It's not only nvidia I saw a strange effect the other day when looking at the systemsettings => workspace appearance => window decorations The same corruption effect appears in the background of *ONLY* the oxygen theme. Hope this is a clue. ;)
Is this bug still valid for Mageia 2 beta 3 ?
Since there has been no nvidia driver for my video card since last november I can not be sure, but I am still seeing this in mga1 with nvidia, but no longer in mga2 using nouveau. This needs testing in Cauldron by someone who had the problem in mga1 and who still has a supported nvidia card in mga2. Not much help - sorry!

Like I said in comment #29 & comment #30, I don't have a nvidia card now, either. However, I also said that the problem occurred on my Mageia 2 Alpha 1 system with my new ATI Radeon HD 4250 GPU. As for the latest Mageia 2 Beta 3, I've tested it on the KDE4 Live CD and also on the installed system. Instead of odd artifacts appearing on the background of the shutdown/restart/logout menu, it is now a whole black/blank background appearing. That is still different from the normal situation where we can see the desktop wallpaper/widgets appearing on the background of the shutdown/restart/logout menu.

I don't find a bug report about that issue. I'll try to remember to check a KDE cauldron later on. Leaving the NEEDINFO keyword as a reminder to myself.
Hi, This bug was filed against cauldron, but we do not have cauldron at the moment. Please report whether this bug is still valid for Mageia 2. Thanks :) Cheers, marja
Still valid for Mageia 2.

can you test with updates_testing kde 4.8.4 ?

Of course. I'm downloading and installing the packages from updates_testing now, and I'll post the test result here later. Thanks.
I've tested with updates_testing kde 4.8.4, and the result is the same as I said in comment #35: "Instead of odd artifacts appearing on the background of the shutdown/restart/logout menu, it is now a whole black/blank background appearing. That is still different from the normal situation where we can see the desktop wallpaper/widgets appearing on the background of the shutdown/restart/logout menu."
confirmed on Mga3 RC but personally, i don't mind this...
Maintainer went MIA, but this bug saw no action in almost two years, anyway, so closing as OLD Feel free to reopen if it is still valid in a currently maintained Mageia version (4 or cauldron / 5beta3 )
