After installing Mageia 2 Beta 2 - dmesg (123.94 KB, text/plain)

Details

Description Stephen Gagne 2011-05-22 15:22:11 CEST
Description of problem: The problem happens every boot since BETA 2, an allocation error scrolls down the screen non-stop. (BETA 1 did not see this problem) Later Kernels in BETA 2 and the initial Kernel in RC1 will panic. The latest Kernel did not panic and Mageia starts up without my intervention. If the "Break" key is hit during the scrolling error the error is terminated. The "Break" key has to be hit twice (scrolling error resumes scrolling) to resume the normal boot sequence. If the "Break" key is not hit and the Kernel panics the error looks similar to the below example.

Kernel Panic-not syncing fatal excepting in interupt9 pid:9 ksoftirgd/1 tainted:g

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):Mageia RC1

How reproducible:Every boot cycle.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.I initially thought I had a hardware problem ... started troubleshooting.
2.Windows is installed on another partition, same drive. It boots and runs with no problems
3.I booted Mandriva Linux One 2010.2 (Live CD) with no problems. I then installed to the same partitions as Mageia and booted fresh install with no problems.
4. Have not yet installed Mandriva Power-pack 64 Bit Edition yet but I would if if you think it would make a difference. This was installed before testing Mageia.
5. I have re-installed Mageia RC1 and have the same boot problem. After applying updates the boot problem still exists but the new Kernel does not panic as did the initial Kernel.

6. If you need logs or a description of my hardware please let me know. I would be more than willing to provide you with anything you need to resolve this problem.

Thank you.
Comment 1 Stephen Gagne 2011-05-22 15:50:33 CEST
Further testing indicates a problem handling USB interrupts. When inserting a USB memory stick the system halts. The same error is displayed here as during a boot time Kernel panic with some additional info.

The final release has the same problem on my current hardware. For some reason the early releases work on my hardware, however, the RC and final release are not usable on my hardware and I have abandoned Mageia for now.

Let me know if I can provide more information to help solve this issue and I would be happy to provide all you need. Until then I have to stick with Mandriva 2010.2 ...

Thomas, do you have time to look into this? Or do you know if this is fixed with a more current kernel?

Comment 6 Stephen Gagne 2011-09-25 16:12:09 CEST
The initial attempt to install Mageia hung (froze) during the hardware probe ... a USB memory stick was inadvertently left connected to the system. The install was aborted and the USB stick was removed. The second attempt was successful and Mageia has now been newly install ... updates were allowed prior to the first complete start-up.

During every boot the "failed to allocate" message scrolls across the screen ... finally terminates after a bit and continues the startup. It is near impossible to read as fast it is scrolling by. This is a little different than my initial findings/statements in that the Kernel does not panic or at least allows the boot cycle to continue. However, if a USB stick is connected to the system during the boot cycle the Kernel does in fact panic. The screen also freezes and a hard reset is required.

Below is the output of the dmesg command. I also took a picture of the "kernel panic" screen and will send if needed.

Comment 8 Stephen Gagne 2011-10-06 14:00:14 CEST
There has been an interesting turn of events. I installed the non-free version of the ATI Radeon HD 2000 video driver (fglrx). The "failed to allocate" messages that usually scrolls across the screen are gone. The boot cycle seems typical with a splash screen and all.

I switched back to the standard ATI Linux video driver to test and the boot cycle seemed OK until the desk top appeared ... then the system froze. The was a USB stick left connected to the system.

I am writing this message after booting up with a USB stick install and every thing seems OK so far. It appears the problem is gone in this configuration at least.

I appears that there may be an IRQ handling conflict between the Linux video driver and the USB controller driver. I'm not sure if this change things from a Kernel issue not not.

Below is the "dmesg" output of my system as it is currently.

As you can see I am using Kernel 2.6.38.8-desktop-5.mga which believe is the most recent Kernel.

Pinging, because nothing has happened with this report for more than 3 months, it still has the status NEW or REOPENED.

@ tmb

Please set status to ASSIGNED if you think this bug was assigned correctly. If for work flow reasons you can't do that, then please put OK on the whiteboard instead. Don't change anything if you want to be pinged by me in this report again ;)

I think there was a hope that the new Kernel would correct the problem. I don't think it has. I have not been using Mageia 1 because even the work around wasn't a fix. System freezes were all too common. I have tested one of the Mageia 2 alphas and the same or similar problem seems to exist. When the beta for Mageia 2 is released I will install and attach a dmesg output.

After installing Mageia 2 Beta 1 I captured this DMESG

It appears that Mageia 2 behaves as Mageia 1 did on my hardware. Every boot cycle the "failed to allocate" message scrolls across the screen ... finally ends and Mageia (KDE) starts. The motherboard has been updated from an MSI 790FX to a Gigabyte 990FX. However, the graphics card is the same.

The one notable difference is when installing a non-free ATI driver all is well until the reboot. When Mageia starts the "failed to allocate" message is still visible but the system locks up and the screen is black. I was unable to recover the system.

Target Milestone: Mageia 1 => Mageia 2

Comment 13 Stephen Gagne 2012-03-17 18:38:31 CET
Downloaded and installed Mageia 2 Beta 2

No apparent difference - still getting "failure to allocate" streaming down the display.

Attaching dmesg for beta 2

Mageia 2 Beta 3 appears to be a whole new animal ... Very Nice.

Mageia 2 RC is even better. What ever the bug was it seams to have been fixed.

Thank you. This the first time since the fork that I have been able to actually use Mageia ... really looking forward to the final release.

This bug should probably marked resolved. Thanks again for all your efforts.
