Advisory:

updated kernel fixes security issues

This kernel update provides the upstream 3.10.49 longterm kernel and
fixes the following security issues:

Array index error in the aio_read_events_ring function in fs/aio.c in
the Linux kernel through 3.15.1 allows local users to obtain sensitive
information from kernel memory via a large head value (CVE-2014-0206).

mm/shmem.c in the Linux kernel through 3.15.1 does not properly implement
the interaction between range notification and hole punching, which allows
local users to cause a denial of service (i_mutex hold) by using the mmap
system call to access a hole, as demonstrated by interfering with intended
shmem activity by blocking completion of (1) an MADV_REMOVE madvise call
or (2) an FALLOC_FL_PUNCH_HOLE fallocate call (CVE-2014-4171).

arch/x86/kernel/entry_32.S in the Linux kernel through 3.15.1 on 32-bit
x86 platforms, when syscall auditing is enabled and the sep CPU feature
flag is set, allows local users to cause a denial of service (OOPS and
system crash) via an invalid syscall number, as demonstrated by number
1000 (CVE-2014-4508).

For other fixes, see the referenced changelogs.

64bits NVidia system, updated to:

Everything works fine, the only thing I did not notice before updating (but maybe only because I didn't look :-[) is that there was a black screen while booting instead of the boot messages that I had expected to see (I had pressed "Esc")

Comment 2 Marja Van Waes 2014-07-25 21:37:43 CEST
Btw, I thought the NVidia driver was used here, because I've seen a bit of NVidia green lines while booting with splash on, and because XFdrake doesn't say "custom" but "NVidia GeForce 8100". However, looking at journalctl -b I see nouveau was used.

Nouveau works great on this machine, though, so I'm fine with that.

Updated advisory:

updated kernel fixes security issues

This kernel update provides the upstream 3.10.50 longterm kernel and
fixes the following security issues:

Linux kernel built with the support for Stream Control Transmission
Protocol (CONFIG_IP_SCTP) is vulnerable to a NULL pointer dereference
flaw. It could occur when simultaneous new connections are initiated
between a same pair of hosts. A remote user/program could use this
flaw to crash the system kernel resulting in DoS (CVE-2014-5077)

For other fixes, see the referenced changelogs.

and rebooting using Nouveau:
tested several applications for a while, everything tested works fine.

I'll now reboot and try to use the proprietary driver for NVIDIA GeForce 8100 instead of nouveau. If it doesn't work, I won't spend time on trying to figure out why not, because nouveau works great. If it does work, I'll report back.

boots up fine using NVidia (Xorg.0.log confirms NVIDIA is really being used). Tried several applications, everything works well.

Comment 11 David Walser 2014-07-31 23:28:58 CEST
There is a fairly major issue I'm seeing with this, but I was seeing it on 3.10.44 also when I booted this machine yesterday after it had been off since Friday. I don't recall seeing the issue when I initially updated to 3.10.44, strangely. Late in the boot process the OOM killer goes homicidal for no reason. It's most noticeable that it kills kdm_greet and X, so the screen blanks and KDM has to relaunch. In the logs you can also see it randomly killing other things. This testing was done on my Mageia 3 i586 Dell Optiplex 990 at home.

I also saw this issue on a completely different machine on Mageia 4 with a 3.14.12 kernel that I built (branched from Cauldron kernel SVN), whereas 3.14.10 works fine.

I'm OK with pushing this as 3.10.44 seems to be affected as well (perplexed as to why I didn't see this earlier though). In fact, according to my journalctl logs, I booted 3.10.44 on June 19th without seeing this issue. The machine ran until last Friday when it was shut down. Maybe some other update in the last month has contributed to this, and what I saw with kernel 3.14 was a different issue.
Comment 12 David Walser 2014-07-31 23:52:15 CEST
If any prior update would cause issues, only dbus seems possible. However, there are no such issues in a VMWare VM (also Mageia 3 i586).
Comment 13 Bill Wilkinson 2014-08-01 16:36:20 CEST
Tested mga3 64 with both server and desktop. System boots normally, no regressions noted.

Comment 14 David Walser 2014-08-02 21:45:04 CEST
Just to clarify, the Dell Optiplex 990 I mentioned in Comment 11 is at work, not home.

As I said in Bug 13801, I'm OK with validating this one if we validate the Mageia 4 kernels, despite the more minor OOM-killer issue.
Comment 15 David Walser 2014-08-05 16:02:44 CEST
Validating (tmb ACK'd it on the qa-discuss list).

Please push this to core/updates for Mageia 3.
