Advisory: updated kernel fixes security issues This kernel update provides the upstream 3.12.25 longterm kernel and fixes the following security issues: Array index error in the aio_read_events_ring function in fs/aio.c in the Linux kernel through 3.15.1 allows local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel memory via a large head value (CVE-2014-0206). The capabilities implementation in the Linux kernel before 3.14.8 does not properly consider that namespaces are inapplicable to inodes, which allows local users to bypass intended chmod restrictions by first creating a user namespace, as demonstrated by setting the setgid bit on a file with group ownership of root (CVE-2014-4014) mm/shmem.c in the Linux kernel through 3.15.1 does not properly implement the interaction between range notification and hole punching, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (i_mutex hold) by using the mmap system call to access a hole, as demonstrated by interfering with intended shmem activity by blocking completion of (1) an MADV_REMOVE madvise call or (2) an FALLOC_FL_PUNCH_HOLE fallocate call (CVE-2014-4171). arch/x86/kernel/entry_32.S in the Linux kernel through 3.15.1 on 32-bit x86 platforms, when syscall auditing is enabled and the sep CPU feature flag is set, allows local users to cause a denial of service (OOPS and system crash) via an invalid syscall number, as demonstrated by number 1000 (CVE-2014-4508). For other fixes, see the referenced changelogs. Mageia 4 64bits non-efi laptop with intel video card, updated to: kernel-desktop-latest-3.12.25-2.mga4 kernel-userspace-headers-3.12.25-2.mga4 kernel-desktop-3.12.25-2.mga4-1-1.mga4 cpupower-3.12.25-2.mga4 Everything works fine, the only thing that struck me as odd is that no new GRUB2 bootloader was automatically written to the MBR, but that is maybe deliberate now when the last bootloader there comes from an install on another partition? (in my case: Cauldron) The new kernel was correctly added to /boot/grub2/grub.cfg

(in my case: Cauldron) That seems to be the reason, I had the same yesterday when updating a 32bits laptop to 3.12.25-1. I manually generated the bootloader from within the Mga4 partition afterwards and now the bootloader there gets auto-updated after updating the kernel to 3.12.25-2

the kernel packages will be rebuilt with a fixed gcc (there is a gcc bug just found and fixed where sched2 miscompiles syscall sequence so it can cause crashes)

Assigning back to QA. It's now built with the fixed gcc, and fixes a couple more bugs and CVEs. Updated Advisory: updated kernel fixes security issues This kernel update provides the upstream 3.12.25 longterm kernel and fixes the following security issues: Array index error in the aio_read_events_ring function in fs/aio.c in the Linux kernel through 3.15.1 allows local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel memory via a large head value (CVE-2014-0206). A flaw was found in the way reference counting was handled in the Linux kernels VFS subsystem when unmount on symlink was performed. An unprivileged local user could use this flaw to cause OOM conditions leading to denial of service or, potentially, trigger use-after-free error (CVE-2014-5045). Linux kernel built with the support for Stream Control Transmission Protocol (CONFIG_IP_SCTP) is vulnerable to a NULL pointer dereference flaw. It could occur when simultaneous new connections are initiated between the same pair of hosts. A remote user/program could use this flaw to crash the system kernel resulting in DoS (CVE.2014-5077). On the following 32bits system https://wiki.mageia.org/en/User:Marja/QA/Hardware#IBM_ThinkPad_R50e used kernel-desktop586-3.12.25-1.mga4-1-1.mga4 with different applications after updating to kernel-desktop586-3.12.25-3.mga4-1-1.mga4.i586.rpm kernel-userspace-headers-3.12.25-3.mga4.i586.rpm kernel-desktop-3.12.25-3.mga4-1-1.mga4.i586.rpm cpupower-3.12.25-3.mga4.i586.rpm Everything works fine, except some issues that are *most*probably* unrelated: 1. one time sound was lost on a m3u video stream from my DVB-S2 tuner (However, it is a day full of showers and thunderstorms, and there are also thunderstorms between here and the 5°West satellite the stream came from) 2. KSnapshot made an empty blue screenshot of a "moving" VLC screen. That is something I never tried before. Screenshotting a static screen still works fine I'll reboot and test kernel-desktop-3.12.25-3.mga4-1-1.mga4.i586.rpm
(In reply to Marja van Waes from comment #10) > > I'll reboot and test kernel-desktop-3.12.25-3.mga4-1-1.mga4.i586.rpm Everything I tried worked fine, there were no sound disruptions this time. The (most probably) unrelated problem with screenshotting a moving VLC screen still exists, static screenshotting works normally.
On the following 64bits system: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/User:Marja/QA/Hardware#Lenovo_ThinkPad_SL510 updated to kernel-desktop-latest-3.12.25-3.mga4.x86_64.rpm kernel-desktop-3.12.25-3.mga4-1-1.mga4.x86_64.rpm kernel-userspace-headers-3.12.25-3.mga4.x86_64.rpm cpupower-3.12.25-3.mga4.x86_64.rpm Used this kernel for a while with KDE after reboot, trying different applications. Everything tested works fine.
Updated the following 64bits Mga4 (KDE) system https://wiki.mageia.org/en/User:Marja/QA/Hardware#NVidia_system_from_Alternate to kernel-desktop-devel-3.12.25-3.mga4-1-1.mga4.x86_64.rpm kernel-desktop-devel-latest-3.12.25-3.mga4.x86_64.rpm kernel-userspace-headers-3.12.25-3.mga4.x86_64.rpm cpupower-3.12.25-3.mga4.x86_64.rpm kernel-desktop-3.12.25-3.mga4-1-1.mga4.x86_64.rpm nvidia-current-kernel-desktop-latest-331.79-5.mga4.nonfree.x86_64.rpm nvidia-current-kernel-3.12.25-desktop-3.mga4-331.79-5.mga4.nonfree.x86_64.rpm kernel-desktop-latest-3.12.25-3.mga4.x86_64.rpm Using the nouveau driver, the updates were tested in KDE for a while with several applications. Everything that was tested worked fine. Now rebooting to see whether everything works with NVIDIA GeForce 8100 instead of nouveau. If it doesn't, I won't spend time on trying to figure out why not, because nouveau works great. If it does, I'll report back.
(In reply to Marja van Waes from comment #13) . > > Now rebooting to see whether everything works with NVIDIA GeForce 8100 > instead of nouveau. If it doesn't, I won't spend time on trying to figure > out why not, because nouveau works great. If it does, I'll report back. It does, according to journalctl -b it is loaded and according to Xorg.0.log is it used. So no more black screen when trying to boot using NVIDIA :-) At first sight, shortly trying several applications including watching a video stream, it seems to work fine, even if I think (but I'm biased, preferring free software over non-free) that nouveau performs better.

tested mga4 32 with server and desktop kernels. No hardware issues, general use OK. No regressions noted.
No issues whatsoever on my Dell Inspiron 600m laptop, in a Virtualbox VM, or on my PogoLinux workstation from 2009 (all Mageia 4 i586). Testing on my brand new PogoLinux workstation, I do see a minor regression with this kernel. The logs show the oom killer activating for no reason and killing preload and systemd-readahead(something, name gets cut off in the logs), reproducibly, late in the boot process. However, those services appear fine in systemctl, so unless you went looking for it, you wouldn't notice this problem. Also it's not the level of issue that I saw with 3.14.12 where the OOM killer killed a lot more things, making services fail and causing other noticeable issues. I don't have any issues with 3.12.21 or 3.14.15 on this machine. I'm OK with validating this Thomas, if you want to go ahead with it. If you do, let's go ahead with the Mageia 3 kernel update (Bug 13802) as well.
The newer PogoLinux machine is using the server kernel, the others I tested on use the desktop kernel. Some info on the newest PogoLinux machine: Intel i7-4770K 3.4GHz (3.9 GHz Turbo) LGA 1150 84W Quad-Core Intel Z87 Chipset (lspcidrake also mentions 8 Series/220 Series Chipset Family) 8GB DDR3 1333MHz Non-ECC Unbuffered RAM (2 4GB sticks) 665W PSU Radeon R9 270X 2GB PCI-E (Southern Islands)
