Description Robert Fox 2014-06-12 10:36:30 CEST
Description of problem:
After applying the last series of updates which included a new dbus and grub2-efi and rebooting - the system starts but the display is blank - I can SSH into the box - and when I change the driver to Nouveau - the system botos into graphical mode - if I choose NVidia proprietary (which was working before on same machine) - the systems books to a blank screen

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
grub2-efi-2.02-0.git9752.4.mga5
dbus-1.6.20-1.mga5
nvidia-current-kernel-desktop-latest-337.25-7.mga5.nonfree
nvidia-current-kernel-3.15.0-desktop-1.mga5-337.25-7.mga5.nonfree

nvidia-current-doc-html-337.25-3.mga5.nonfree
x11-driver-video-nvidia-current-337.25-3.mga5.nonfree

How reproducible:
Everytime

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Choode Proprietary NVidia driver - and reboot
2. System boot but NO graphical display (blank and doesn't respond to keyboard except ctrl-alt-del reboot)
3. SSH works into the machine (so it is running) -
4. Change driver to Nouveau - and reboot
5. System boots fine into graphical interface

Please attach (NOT paste) the logs from running, eg the /tmp/xorg.log resulting from running the following command:

journalctl -b -e /bin/Xorg >/tmp/xorg.log

I changed the driver to Nvidia proprietary (from Nouveau which works) - and rebooted. Got a blank screen and could not use keyboard or mouse.

SSH'd into the machine from another - ran the command you gave - and looked at the results. There was nothing found in the log except:

-- Logs begin at Sun 2014-03-09 10:35:50 CET, end at Mon 2014-06-16 10:20:31 CEST. --

So I reran XFdrake and changed back to nouveau - which works.

You did run journalctl as root, didn't you?
Comment 4 Robert Fox 2014-06-16 12:47:11 CEST
YES I did -

I continure to check this since the bug was reported and there were many updates in Cauldron. The problem still exists - although I have another machine with an older Nvidia card (GT220) which seems to work with proprietary driver.

The machine in question has a GeForce GTX 760

Once again, when I choose the proprietary driver the system boots into a black screen and does not respond (except through ssh!)

I can't get a desktop either, but the symptoms are a bit different.

Using the nouveau driver, everything is fine until the last line of journalctl says that startup has completed. Then nothing more happens until I am dropped to rescue mode.

The desktop works fine for me under Nouveau - maybe it is card dependent? I said earlier that I have a machine with an older GT220 based NVidia card and it works fine with the proprietary drivers!?!? Strange.

My case was easy to fix. It has happened before. It is probably unrelated, and IMO should be a separate bug. I haven't checked yet.

I have a USB stick always connected. It was in /etc/fstab as /media/win_c3. It was unplugged, and there was a "Dependency failed" message for it and following filesystems. I couldn't boot into failsafe, either. I commented out the line in fstab, and the system booted normally. The USB stick now mounts as a removable medium, as it should.

I am using the nouveau driver which works for you, Robert. I did change it to nvidia in xorg.conf but either I didn't save the change properly, or something put it back. I will run further tests with the nvidia driver.
Comment 9 Doug Laidlaw 2014-06-25 17:36:47 CEST
I can't get it to run, either. I am running Cauldron in i586. The only (EE) line in Xorg.log is:

[ 43.115] (EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver
 not found)

This issue has been around since Mga3. It used to allow me to have a desktop, but no OpenGL. This time, X can't start. I filed a bug, and it looks as though there are a few others.

Strangely, I am not having this problem with 64-bit Official. The nVidia driver from the repos runs without any complaint.

Whatever changed in the last cauldron updates (as of this post) which included an updated NVidia and Kernel rpms - it works now!! Thanks - not sure what fixed it but it appears fixed on my machine. Now all I need is my Evolution back (see bug 13518) so I don't have to use Thunderbird - and life is back to "normal"

Thanks!

At the moment, in i586, I have the nvidia rpms but not the kernel they need.
