MAGEIA 4 INSTALLATION WOES Upgrading from Mageia 3. From the moment that little blue light came on I could not wait. Upgrading from Mageia 3 to Mageia 4!!! All I had to do was tell it to upgrade..Mageia 3 was up to date, it had what I thought was the latest and greatest rpms. Short story that upgrade turned into a can of worms that I did not have the expertise to salvage. Install using Mageia 4 DVD ISO. Having successfully installed from Mageia 2 to Mageia 3 I felt confident that installing Mageia 4 would be a breeze. I mean what could go wrong? Make a few selections, such as root, graphic desktops and a few other items, hit the install button and take a nap or eat lunch. Afterall it takes about 2 to 3 hours for the install. First indication of trouble; failure to list sda, second Windows 8.1 is not listed but Mageia 3 had no problem finding it. Well got that fixed and setup the network and downloaded updates. Then it was time to reboot. Well reboot was a miserable failure. Control D wow lots of help there. Now what? I don't have the expertise to solve this problem and the Mageia 4 Release Notes gives me the impression that the DVD install or upgrade options were never tested. Well thought it was operator (me) error and I tried it three or four times before throwing away the DVD. Install using Mageia 4 Live DVD KDE4 ISO. This was a piece of cake. Everything worked the way it was supposed to work. I had KDE4 installed and now I decided to install the following desktops LXDE, RazorQt, Mate and Cinammon. I may install XFCE and GNOME later on. I am using MATE and I like it. There is a problem with the Mageia 4 DVD ISO whether you choose to examine it is up to you. The computer used to installed Mageia 4; Dell Inspiron 660, 1TB hard drive. (In reply to Bert Moore from comment #0) > the Mageia 4 Release Notes gives me the impression that the DVD > install or upgrade options were never tested. They were extensively tested, but we can always use more testers: there are so many possible set-ups of a system, there are so many possible combinations of hardware and software: impossible to test them all. You might want to consider joining our QA team https://wiki.mageia.org/en/QA_Team to help test new isos. https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Pre-release_ISO_testing That increases the chance that upgrade or install problems you have get solved before release. Currently, the Mageia 4.1 isos are being tested and there'll be a new version of the x86_64 pre-4.1 iso available soon.

(In reply to Marja van Waes from comment #2) > pre-4.1 iso I mean the 4.1 iso for QA to test, it gets improved until it is good enough to be released
