Description Lee Miller 2014-04-17 23:23:55 CEST
Description of problem: When printing in LibreOffice Writer, one extra blank page is added to the end of the printed output most of the time, but am not yet aware of when and when not, and it only started doing it recently. So it must be the result of a recent upgrade to some component of mga4. It never does it with other programs such as Google Chrome or KWrite.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

How reproducible: Almost always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. In LibreOffice Writer, select Print of file being worked on.
2. File gets printed and one extra blank page is added almost every time.

My printer is an: HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-In-One - N911g
Version of HPLIP: hplip-3.13.9-4.mga4
Version of CUPS: cups-1.7.0-7.mga4

Please let me know if you need any other information.

Clarification: This is NOT a Mageia bug!

My earlier observation of one extra blank page being created randomly, proved to be the back side of the last page to be printed for an odd number of pages when attempting to print in Duplex mode. Printing in Duplex mode in LibreOffice has been broken with later versions (was also a problem in OpenOffice before the fork), and only works sometimes. Most of the time it's not possible to print two-sided (with exception; see "trick" in last full paragraph), and so the last page of an odd number of pages to be printed produces one additional blank page (the back side of the last page), because the program must "think" it IS printing in the Duplex mode when it's physically printing in the one-sided mode.

After researching the Web, it became obvious that this was a fairly widespread occurrence, and not exclusively a Mageia problem. Initially, LibreOffice support claimed it was an HPLIP problem; however, since with the exception of LibreOffice all other programs are able to successfully print in duplex mode, and this problem is not limited to HP printers (requests for help from people with Epson and other non-HP printers), it has to be a LibreOffice bug.

There is a "trick" to get it to print one-time in Duplex, but as soon as it does, you have to apply the trick again and for each time you want to print in Duplex. It's still a bug using the very latest "stable" or "testing" version of both LibreOffice and HPLIP.

So please mark this "CLOSED" and "INVALID." Thank you.
