Description William Kenney 2014-03-22 21:25:08 CET
The LightWorks for Linux project has now entered it's Beta phase.
According to LightWorks it has been successfully tested on:

Debian Distros: Ubuntu/Lubuntu/Xbuntu 13.10 Mint 15

RPM Distros: Fedora 19, OpenSuse and Arch Linux

I have successfully installed the Beta version on Mint 16.

Some of the finest films of the past 20 years have been edited
on LightWorks. Oscar-winning editors around the world use it
every day. http://shotonwhat.com lists 134 major motion pictures
that were edited using LightWorks. There is going to be both
free and paid versions of LightWorks. There is an open source
free to use version that is fully functional and compatible
with another video editor on Mageia, OpenShot. The LightWorks
Pro version carries an about $80/year subscription fee which
is due mostly to the use of proprietary codecs used by the
High end digital cameras in the film industry.

This may be one of those they got it and we don't deals where
the major Linux distros support LightWorks and we'll be kinda
behind not to have the free version in our repos.

Everything can be found starting at:

This makes a lot of sense and a good way of distributing Lightworks.
I did recently contact Ubuntu with a hope of getting into their
Software Centre, but so far I have been unsuccessful. We are
happy for you to go ahead and include Lightworks in Mageia's
repositories as long as we can both get some good PR out of
this and as long as Lightworks is shown to be a professional
editor running on Linux.

I have just downloaded Mageia 4 and installed it in a virtual
machine (Mac running Parallels) and installed the latest version
of Lightworks; all working well.

Do they really allow to redistribute LW? Then why they do require registration before downloading it? Or what they mean with this "a good way of distributing Lightworks"? Just a mention that it works out of the box on Mageia Linux?

Is there a 32-bit version of LW? If not then change the bug report Platform field.

Another thing is a bug 12493.

Would it be possible to have LightWorks packaged for Mageia 6 ?

I read user feedback telling that using LightWorks website's RPM did not work on Mageia (missing library).

Thanks.

We've all kinda gone over this already. The Lightworks installer really is like
the Flash thing in that you download the file(s) from some other source.
So in reality we are really only acting as a way to redistribute the
Lightworks NLE. We're still kinda stuck with OpenShot as our only real NLE
for now.

Assigning this package request to all packagers collectively. On a voluntary basis, one of them might want to integrate it to the distribution and maintain it for bug and security fixes.

You might also want to join the packager team to maintain this piece of software: see https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Becoming_a_Mageia_Packager

Thanks Sam. Lets see if someone is interested.
It's become a mover and shaker in the movie industry.
Be nice if it also worked on Mageia. Right now
the only serious package like this is OpenShot
and it's a light weight ( no pun intended ).

Setting this to invalid, as source code have never been officially released and they seem to have abandoned that, what i can find.

Developer provides rpm packages.

I installed the rpm and it works fine except when trying to view the logs.

I see there's been a discussion to make it into a flatpak:

And this page is interesting as well:

https://forum.lwks.com/threads/suggestion-provide-lightworks-as-distro-agnostic-package.132536/

All we need now is the full source code.
Comment 32 Dave Hodgins 2024-03-28 17:41:09 CET
There is nothing on the website that I could find to indicate the source
is available to download, or to redistribute.

The use of the "free" license requires logging into their website every 90
days.

I don't see how Mageia could redistribute it, in any repository.
