Description Sascha Schroeder 2014-03-02 17:27:32 CET
Description of problem:

Old problem, still here: KDE won't let me set my default browser inside "Standard Components".

I use Firefox in /opt and am able to select it from there. But after I click "Save" and I come back this field is empty.

New tries will also fail, field stays empty, no matter what you selected.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
KDE 4.11.4

How reproducible:

Steps to Reproduce:
1. KDE system settings
2. "Standard Components"
3. set a browser, I took mine from /opt directory
4. click "save"
5. come back here or just click a link from inside applications
6. your browser isn't recognized
6a. field stays empty as if you never filled it out

Reproducible:

System Settings
  -->Default Applications
     -->Web Browser

works for me.

Comment 2 Guillaume 2014-03-03 21:08:05 CET
For me, the problem appeared since I configured a custom version of Firefox to be the default web browser (in /opt). I now use Firefox from the repos and the problem exists only with Thunderbird, not with other components from my DE (as Konversation, Pidgin, Liferea etc ...)

@Guillaume: Have both in /opt.

TB is saved. FF not.

I meant that clicking on a link with other applications than TB works fine. My problem comes from clicking on a link in Thunderbird ? Is it the same for you ?
Is your web browser set to be the default one ?

This shouldn't be a problem when your symlinks are correct.

When I click a link in TB the website opens in my /opt-FF. :-) Shouldn't be too big of problem.

What do you mean "set to be default"? Where?

Regarding KDE system setting, it won't let me save it, symlinks are correct, I just do not know why TB is recognized and saved by KDE System Settings and FF is not :-/

If you manually put /opt/firefox/firefox there and apply, it is saved. Works fine here, just tested on Mageia 4. If at all, this should be reported upstream at https://bugs.kde.org as it's not a Mageia bug.

Seems this one is related: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=208204
The proper fix should be to create a .desktop file for your /opt FF either systemwide in /usr/share/applications or in your ~/.local/share/applications.
