History:
Suspend and hibernate was working in mga2 a half year ago, then it started misbehaving. I thought something had gone wrecked locally, but in hindsight i see it may have been updates.

I skipped mga3 on most of my machines, instead waited for and then installed mga4 beta, and kept it updating. Sometimes waking up from suspend and hibernate was OK, sometimes not. Unfortunately it settled for... *not* working at mga4 final!
Reinstalled final mga4: Not working ever in mga4 final+updates...

At the same time i have another very similar machine, the Thinkpad T61 - exactly same graphic chips. Where I istalled beta2 and have kept updating. *That* machine return correctly from suspend and hibernate. I also think that machine always resumed OK on mga2.

( Both computers have like many other with Nvidia graphic the problem of brightness control not working, and the occasional black dots in upper left part of display )

Problem:

§ When waking up from hibernation i get a plain black screen. No key is working except holding down power button 4 seconds.

§ When waking up from suspend i see the Nvidia logo briefly, the the login, and when desktop shows up, active program are restored - but not from the last session, but from an old session (maybe remembered from before reinstall as /home was kept) and i have checked KDE settings say to restore last session.

Graphic chip: Nvidia âG86M [Quadro NVS 140M]

I set it critical as user may loose work.

OK, now the two computers work similarly:
None is perfect, R61 is worse than T61

I had wrong thinking above: resuming of course mean it should resume the whole session from RAM/disk. What happened often before and more seldom now, on R61, is that X crash after resume from suspend R61.

Both computers have a strange minute long delay with black screen between reading session disk until activating. R61 have one extra minute long delay showing text screen before the black screen delay.
Possibly it have been working like this for long but i/my wife did not wait two minutes while it was playing dead...

__R61
Resuming from suspend works many times when i only have kwrite, terminal, opera, gkrellm open, will keep trying to understand what make X crash - may be related to when user have other programs up.

Resuming from hibernation is interesting. It starts as it should: Bios boot, grub, boot to enter luks key, then continues a bit, then it writes it reads saved image, then... it looks like frozen for a minute, then goes black, then it takes another minute, before screen saver shows up and it responds to keypress.
Interestingly, if i have it set to sleep after one minute (for testing purpose), it suspend instead of showing screensaver. (and it resumes OK if i wake it after that too)
I have not yet seen it fail to restore.

_T61
Resuming from suspend: Have not yet seen it fail.

Resuming from hibernation: Similar to R61: it do have a black "dead" minute, but not the first part where R61 is frosen for a first minute with text display.

Any idea what to test / look for in what log?

Summary: Lenovo R61 hangs on wakeup from hibernate, X session is lost on wake up from suspend => Restore from hibernate pauses 2 minutes dead, X crash (seldom now) on resume from suspend, Thinkpad R61, T61

X crash on resume separated to -> Bug 12712

Let this bug be about the delays when restoring from hibernate

Summary: Restore from hibernate pauses 2 minutes dead, X crash (seldom now) on resume from suspend, Thinkpad R61, T61 => Restore from hibernate pauses 2 minutes dead, Thinkpad R61, T61

Comment 4 Morgan Leijström 2014-02-11 14:09:16 CET
Lowered severity as the delay itself do not cause any loss of data.

...However the user may decide to press power off the system after waiting a minute or two at a black screen with dead keyboard...

Contrast: My old mga4 desktop system 4xOpteron, Radeon, resumes nicely from hibernation.

Severity: critical => major

Hurray!
This problem seem gone in mga5 x86_64 , tested in fresh network install shortly after alpha 1 isos release, and also at updates until now on both thinkpad R61 and T61. Kernel 3.15.6-desktop-1.mga5

It was still a problem earlier today on fedora 20 which we have now left. mga4 have not been running lately on this hardware but i suppose nothing have changed, so I guess we can not set it as solved, but actually it works nicely on cauldron.

Production systems on these laptops are now switched to mga5 :)

Still OK :)
