Description Martin Ward 2014-02-04 11:46:30 CET
Description of problem:

I have just upgraded from Mageia 3 to Mageia 4.
Every few minutes a message pops up from syslogd saying
"PackageKit: daemon start" followed five minutes later by
"PackageKit: daemon quit"

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

packagekit-0.8.14-3.mga4

How reproducible:

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Upgrade to Mageia 4
2. Wait a few minutes.

I tried stopping packagekit in system services: but it is started
automatically.

Further investigation suggests that this is a known bug in packagekit 0.8.14-1
which was fixed in the Debian version on or before 8th December 2013:

Thanks for the report. Thanks also for finding the fix.

If you're using KDE, this may also be related to Apper being activated.

Patch applied in Mageia 4 and Cauldron.

Martin, please confirm that the updated packages in Mageia 4 core/updates_testing fix this problem for you. It appears from your initial report that you're running on x86_64 (we'll need tests on both architectures before releasing the update). Please let us know what architectures you test on. Thanks again.

Advisory:
----------------------------------------
PackageKit was incorrectly sending debug messages to syslog by default. It
has been patched to correct this.

I did not manage to reproduce in Mageia 4 i586. How am I suppose to receive popups from syslogd? I tried installing syslog-ng and starting the service, but nothing particular happened.

Comment 6 David Walser 2014-02-11 21:02:04 CET
I'm not sure; Martin didn't indicate which desktop environment he's using. Perhaps seeing the issue would also require having syslogd running when you log in. I wouldn't worry too much about it; the reporter confirmed that it fixes the issue, so if the package installs fine on i586 this should be validatable.
Comment 7 Rémi Verschelde 2014-02-11 21:08:21 CET
Then validating, the install goes fine on i586.

Advisory upload. Could a sysadmin push the update to core/updates in Mageia 4?
