I ave variouos systems with haldaemon disabled and everything works fine (looks like it...). dm starts OK here with haldaemon disabled altogether. The change shouldn't happen for Mageia 1, too late in the release cycle. Hopefully for Mageia 2, hal will have been phased out completely from the distro.
