Description Jonas Thiem 2014-01-11 08:53:19 CET
Description of problem:
CPU temperature reaches 90 degree celsius, fan still happily runs at level 5 (with level 7 available). Loading the module thinkpad_acpi with fan_control=1 and echoing "level 7" into /proc/acpi/ibm/fan works perfectly fine to get the machine to cool down again. Echoing level 5 (previous: level auto) changed nothing, so this is obviously the level the automatic control had chosen. /proc/acpi/ibm/thermal gave an obvious output that various sensors have reached 90 degree celsius.

Laptop model: Thinkpad x121e

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
3.10.24

How reproducible:
100%

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Get laptop to run hot
2. Confirm temperatures at 85 degree celsius or more in /proc/acpi/ibm/thermal
3. Confirm fan speed is not the full by manually enforcing full with echo level 7 > /proc/acpi/ibm/fan
-> it really should be running at full speed at this point!!

Reproducible:

Steps to Reproduce:

You've set version to Mageia 2 Jonas which is no longer supported, was this intentional?
Comment 2 Jonas Thiem 2014-01-11 21:47:13 CET
Oh no sorry, I'm actually using Mageia 3 as uname -a confirms.

jonas@localhost:~$ uname -a
Linux localhost 3.10.24-desktop-2.mga3 #1 SMP Fri Dec 13 20:34:53 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Version: 2 => 3

Can you try 3.10.25 from updates_testing ?

iirc I saw a report that that resolved a similar issue for another user
Comment 4 Jonas Thiem 2014-01-11 22:21:04 CET
I just tried to test 3.10.25 but somehow, I can't seem to boot into it:

jonas@localhost:~$ uname -a
Linux localhost 3.10.24-desktop-2.mga3 #1 SMP Fri Dec 13 20:34:53 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
jonas@localhost:~$ su
Password:
[root@localhost jonas]# urpmi kernel-desktop-latest
Package kernel-desktop-latest-3.10.25-1.mga3.x86_64 is already installed
[root@localhost jonas]#

.. despite picking the regular boot entry and not the other explicit 3.10.24 one. Not sure what to do at this point to get into 3.10.25 :x

@ napcok

Didn't you have this issue (overheating of laptop), too?

If so: which method did you use to install kernel 3.10.25 from updates_testing and which mirror did you use?

Comment 6 Daniel Napora 2014-01-17 11:19:21 CET
I had similiar issue - overheating with 3.10.24 kernel on my laptop (HP Pavilion g7). Then I did install kernel 3.10.25 from updates-testing (and all kernel related packages) - I just enable updates-testing and install all updates if I remember correctly. Temperature goes down but was still little bit higher than before 3.10.24. Anyway laptop starts to work ok, no more crashes because overheating.

Mageia 3 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status 4 months ago.
http://blog.mageia.org/en/2014/11/26/lets-say-goodbye-to-mageia-3/

Mageia 3 is no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of Mageia
please feel free to click on "Version" change it against that version of Mageia
and reopen this bug.
