I wish I had the package xfce4-MailWatch-plugin. It has the advantage of working regardless of email client and it works even if the mail client is not open.
xfce4-mailwatch-plugin should be in the repos soon, please test then close this report.

Yes, it reappeared with the update this morning with version 1.1.0-6. My update logs tell me that was removed on 03/08/2011 with version 1.1.0-5 I'm sorry for reacting too fast
