Description Bogdan Gruescu 2014-01-04 14:14:00 CET
Description of problem:

I've seen this since years and it's not Mageia specific.
When choosing English US as installation language, two localization packages for firefox got installed: 'firefox-en_GB' and 'firefox-en_ZA', while normally 'firefox-en_GB' should be enough.

can you provide the file /root/drakx/report.bug.xz as an attachment ?
will give a try to look
Comment 2 Bogdan Gruescu 2014-01-10 06:29:11 CET
I think I don't have that file, there is only 'updates.log' in /root/drakx. My installation is from Mageia 4 beta2 Live GNOME iso.
As you are doing some test for the RC release anyway, could you please check whether you have the package 'firefox-en_ZA' installed?
Comment 3 Manuel Hiebel 2014-01-10 20:14:33 CET
was it the dvd live with several languages ?

and in fact iirc it's hard to manage as "remove-unused-packages" check what locales-* (via require cf bug 11352) is used and as no locales-en_* exist yet

Yes, I've forgotten to mention that it was the 64 bit iso which contains support for many languages.

I guess the problem is that a package named 'firefox-en_US' does not exist, there are only 'firefox-en_GB' and 'firefox-en_ZA' available ... and it might be difficult to teach the installer which of these 2 to prefer.

I don't know how the installer works. If it is considering the 'locales-*' element only, well, for Spanish there are 4 packages: 'firefox-es_AR', 'firefox-es_CL', 'firefox-es_ES' and 'firefox-es_MX'.

When starting firefox, it's obvious that only one of these localization packages can be used at a time no matter how many of these are installed. It's not only about wasting resources, but maybe for some users firefox will use the wrong localization package (when more than one are installed).

Having an issue with the latest Firefox update under Mageia 4.1 for the past week. Advised of update being available brings up two language packages, neither of which should be necessary for use in the U.S.: en_GB and en_ZA. The error message received when attempting to update my system is this:

1 installation transactions failed

There was a problem during the installation:

firefox = 0:31.5.3 is needed by firefox-en_GB-31.5.3-1.mga4.noarch

firefox = 0:31.5.3 is needed by firefox-en_ZA-31.5.3-1.mga4.noarch

Suggestions?  Thanks.

Resolved, installed today. Thank you!

Still valid in current Mageia 5 installed 22-05-2015 where I installed Mageia 5 and updated all repositories/installed apps first before installing Firefox using "urpmi firefox".

It _should _ be temporarily fixed by using

sudo rpm -e --nodeps firefox-en_GB, IIRC

but it should not install it in the first place.

Needs to be added to ERRATA and hopefully fixed in an update.

Why add it to the Errata? If you think all cauldron bugs that were still valid close to Mageia 5 release should be in the errata, wouldn't it then be easier to just make a search for all those bugs and add that search to the errata?

Firefox is a major package so this issue will touch various english-speaking users, that's why I thought an Errata entry would be nice.
Comment 12 Robert Wallace 2015-07-08 22:28:52 CEST
Advised of Firefox update for Mageia 5 fails due to same issue as in version 4.1:

1 installation transactions failed

There was a problem during the installation:

firefox = 0:38.1.0 is needed by firefox-en_ZA-38.1.0-1.mga5.noarch

firefox = 0:38.1.0 is needed by firefox-en_GB-38.1.0-1.mga5.noarch

firefox-en_ZA is not needed on my system, the en_GB language ought to suffice. Install fails due to the added "0:" in front of the Firefox entry?

Can you post full update logs?
Comment 14 David Walser 2015-07-09 16:25:02 CEST
This should be fixed now. There is a firefox-en_US package.

As for the error in Comment 12, the epoch of 0 is correct, so that shouldn't be causing installation problems. I'd advise just uninstalling firefox-en_ZA and firefox-en_GB and installing firefox-en_US.

Closing then.
