+++ This bug was initially created as a clone of Bug #11310 +++ First round of pre-release isos for Mageia4-beta1: GNOME LiveCD: Blue Mageia logo screen turns black in a few minutes. Starts at the top, then all over. Part of dmesg is then visible. Graphics do not cope, prolly missing driver. Going to tty, login as live and su - to root, I restart X and get the choice of language, license question etc. After timezone etc. it takes infinitely long... Waited stg like 1 1/2 hours. Nothing. Test failed. KDE4 LiveCD A few minutes after trying to go live the Mageia logo blue background turns to black. No ttys can be reached. Alt + Ctl + Backspace does nothing. Live mode is not reachable. No trick that I know results in anything. After ca. 15 minutes the laptop turns itself off (which it never does otherwise). Test failed On real hw: nvidia optimus, Geforce GT 555M. Intel sandy bridge; laptop

Come to think of it, most likely classical installer works okay with nouveau driver, but Live disks don't . When doing full install I need to not choose intel - always have 2 options in xorg setup - and then it goes well. I can predict same will apply to 64 bit, but these need to be tested by me yet.
Almost the same story when trying to go the route Install from boot menu when satrting up the Live CD (GNOME): Screen goes almost completely black (some graphical anomalies seen is all), change to tty. kill X gives me a Mageia blue desktop, but LiveCD is ejected at the same time. No tty available anymore, no way to restart the install as far as I know.
Upon change to tty as per request MrsB: lsmod |grep -e nou -e nv -e nv -e intel -e i9 i915 630512 4 nouveau 8772609 1 nvram 13986 0 ttm 71764 1 nouveau drm_kms_helper ... 2 i915,nouveau drm 8 ttm,i915,drm_kms_helper,nouveau i2c_algo_bit 2 i915,nouveau mxm_wmi 1 nouveau wmi 2 mxm_wmi,nouveau i2c_core 6 drm,i915,i2c_i801,drm_kms_helper,i2c_algo_bit,nouveau button 2 i915,nouveau video 2 i915,nouveau
why did you clone bug 11310 if you have "same" hardware ? update of it is enough
Dear Manuel, That was MrsB's suggestion: we were both on irc when it happened and not sure it was the same. But if you are it is, feel free to close.

Dick, can you try adding the kernel parameter xdriver=vesa (note that due to bug 5263 you'll have to press f6, esc, up arrow, then f6 again, to edit the kernel parameters).

Thanks. Works to a certain extent. Graphics are poor, lost of graphical anomalies when in live mode.

other options to test: try to boot with intel: rd.blacklist=nouveau xdriver=intel try to boot with nouveau: rd.blacklist=i915 xdriver=nouveau
CC: (none) => mageiasv
Kernel paramater ' rd.blacklist=nouveau xdriver=intel ' works okay to get to live, but only if I go to tty and kill X at the point where I need to choose language and accept licence, otherwise I do not get these screens to complete.

Please note this problem does not occur with the classical installer isos !
Hardware: i586 => All
Thats because traditional installer isos runs in vesa/framebuffer mode and does not have any on nvidia/intel drivers active during install
I think I hit the same bug with last night's isos, intel 810 and later video card. (don't have nvidia on that system), Live KDE DVD 32bits Booting safe mode works fine, installing from "safe mode Live" works fine, too. Booting normal mode gives a hard freeze, choosing to install from the boot menu gives a hard freeze, too. There are no problems with traditional installer.
CC: (none) => marja11
btw, I see two identical intel 810 and later video cards with lspcidrake -v, the only difference is the one has "DISPLAY_VGA", the other "DISPLAY_OTHER"
Same hw, same workaround for beta2: Gnome Live DVD (64 bit) not working: with kernel parameter rd.blacklist=nouveau xdriver=intel I cannot get to live mode. If I go to tty2 and kill X, the process stops and ejects the disk. So this makes it worse then the latest rounds of beta1
Whiteboard: 4beta1 => 4beta2
Summary: Cannot start a live session GNOME/KDE4 with M4B1 LiveCDs/DVDs (intel/nvidia) => Cannot start a live session GNOME/KDE4 with M4B2 LiveCDs/DVDs (intel/nvidia)
On the other hand, for the KDE LiveDVD (64 bits) the same kernel parameter and once killing X does give me a Live session.
Whiteboard: 4beta2 => 4RC
(In reply to Marja van Waes from comment #14) > I think I hit the same bug with last night's isos, intel 810 and later video > card. (don't have nvidia on that system), Live KDE DVD 32bits > > Booting safe mode works fine, installing from "safe mode Live" works fine, > too. Same as for dvg: safe mode doesn't work for me any more in the first round of 4RC isos, either (I didn't try the beta2's) > > Booting normal mode gives a hard freeze, choosing to install from the boot > menu gives a hard freeze, too. > > There are no problems with traditional installer. @ tmb Should I clone this report for my same problem on two laptops without nvidia, but with just intel ? (for the one) [marja@localhost ~]$ lspcidrake -v | grep Graphics unknown : Intel Corporation|Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller [DISPLAY_OTHER] (vendor:8086 device:2a43 subv:17aa subd:213a) (rev: 07) Card:Intel 810 and later: Intel Corporation|Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller [DISPLAY_VGA] (vendor:8086 device:2a42 subv:17aa subd:213a) (rev: 07) [marja@localhost ~]$ and for the other only one "Graphics" entry, I'll post it in my next comment
the other is (from a working Mga3 Live session): [live@localhost ~]$ lspcidrake -v | grep Graphics Card:Intel 810 and later: Intel Corporation|3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller [DISPLAY_VGA] (vendor:8086 device:0166 subv:17aa subd:21f7) (rev: 09) [live@localhost ~]$
The only laptop where starting Live (4RC) does work, but /only/ when using safe mode, has: [user@DenkBlok ~]$ lspcidrake -v | grep Graphic Card:Intel 810 and later: Intel Corporation|82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device [DISPLAY_OTHER] (vendor:8086 device:3582 subv:1014 subd:0562) (rev: 02) Card:Intel 810 and later: Intel Corporation|82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device [DISPLAY_VGA] (vendor:8086 device:3582 subv:1014 subd:0562) (rev: 02) [user@DenkBlok ~]$
(In reply to Marja van Waes from comment #19) > the other is (from a working Mga3 Live session): > > [live@localhost ~]$ lspcidrake -v | grep Graphics > Card:Intel 810 and later: Intel Corporation|3rd Gen Core processor Graphics > Controller [DISPLAY_VGA] (vendor:8086 device:0166 subv:17aa subd:21f7) (rev: > 09) > [live@localhost ~]$ The above output is from Mageia 3 live on the newest laptop (ThinkPad L530). The Mageia-4-RC-LiveDVD-KDE4-x86_64-DVD.iso from the 2nd round failed, re-tried the 32bits Mageia-4-RC-LiveDVD-KDE4-i586-DVD.iso (2nd round), safe mode: after hanging 10 minutes at "Checking for new hardsware [OK]" ctl+alt+BS2x doesn't help, rebooted (ctrl+alt+del does work) retried (still the 32bits iso) with option acpi_osi="!Windows 2012" that didn't work either. Should I have removed something before adding that? then, same 32 bits iso, also tried with rd.blacklist=i810 xdriver=vesa which didn't work, and with rd.blacklist=intel xdriver=vesa which didn't work either. but maybe blacklisting "intel 810 and later" is done in a different way?
Same again for me: GNOME LiveDVD 64 bits on nvidia/sandy bridge with kernel para. <rd.blacklist=nouveau xdriver=intel> and/or [ Ctrl + Alt + 2x BS ] does not give language/licence gui. Laptop needed hard reset.

*3rd* round of isos, sorry, but nothing changed: Mageia-4-RC-LiveDVD-KDE4-x86_64-DVD.iso on the new laptop (ThinkPad L530) Still: Normal boot, safe boot, and boot with 'acpi_osi="!Windows 2012"' end at "Checking for new hardware [OK] Mageia-4-RC-LiveDVD-KDE4-i586-DVD.iso on the oldes laptop (ThinkPad R50e): Still: Normal boot ends in a light black screen, safe boot leads to a working Live session
Safe boot with nvidia/sandy bridge: same result as #c24. No known workarounds working with Gnome LiveDVD 64 bits for my hw.
And same for KDE LiveDVD 64 bits. Sorry for confision: there is a mistake in #c2: "need to not choose Intel" should read "need to choose Intel"
Can you tru to boot into runlevel 3 by adding: systemd.unit=multi-user.target to kernel command line then check what modules are loaded with lsmod
also try to remove "splash silent"
ok, so looking at video done by marja: we get into a loop of "checking new hardware" & "starting netprofile" they were printed 4 times each before video ended... And to be able to test some more: I also now have uploaded 2 test isos available for iso QA: Mageia-4-RC-free-LiveCD-KDE4-int-i586-CD - this one has no nonfree drivers or firmwares Mageia-4-RC-test-LiveCD-KDE4-int-i586-CD - this one does not run the service_harddrake that the boot hangs on, so I dont know how far it will boot
CC: sysadmin-bugs => mageia, thierry.vignaud
(In reply to Thomas Backlund from comment #c27 and #c28) adding "systemd.unit=multi-user.target" and removing "splash silent": Sorry but I cannot in any way I know get to any tty with [ alt + ctl + Fx ] nor with [ alt + ctrl + 2x BS ] next I will try the isos from #c29.
To c#30 Mageia-4-RC-free-LiveCD-KDE4-int-i586-CD without any addition / deletion of kernel parameters: The only tty I get is tty3 showing * PCMCIA: probing pci bus * not found, etcetera More results later...
Continued from c#31 No workaround of adding / deleting kernel parameters gives me a language/licence gui, nor any tty (except for tty3 showing: see c#31) But the Mageia-4-RC-test-LiveCD-KDE4-int-i586-CD gives me a Live mode without any workaround, without problem getting there. I wrote an 'lsmod' command result and will attach it later. Am able to start 'install' from desktop: will report as far as needed.
(In reply to Thomas Backlund from comment #29) > ok, so looking at video done by marja: > > we get into a loop of "checking new hardware" & "starting netprofile" > they were printed 4 times each before video ended... > OOPS, I wasn't aware I had never mentioned that those messages recurred. Another recurring, earlier message (but it also recurred on the laptop where the 3rd round Live does work well in safe mode) was about sound.... it is still there after install from the safe booted Live (3rd round), when booting into the just installed system: "Reached target sound card" at least 7 times. Sound does work. > > And to be able to test some more: > I also now have uploaded 2 test isos available for iso QA: > Thanks, Thomas! I'll test asap
(In reply to Marja van Waes from comment #33) > "Reached target sound card" at least > 7 times. Sound does work. I'm not sure the "R" is the only capital in that line.

Install in progress from desktop with Mageia-4-RC-test-LiveCD-KDE4-int-i586-CD Best working Live iso since beta2 or earlier for my hardware. For further reference see foot of http://bn.parinux.org/p/mageia4rc
See pad * Mageia-4-RC-test-LiveCD-KDE4-int-i586-CD.iso _+_ solves the problems for the ThinkPad L530 ... boots nicely into a Live session _-_ but makes things worse for the ThinkPad R50e, for which safe mode doesn't give a working Live session any more * Mageia-4-RC-free-LiveCD-KDE4-int-i586-CD _-_ didn't work for the ThinkPad L530 at all, for the ThinkPad R50e safe mode leads to a working session, as before, but, _+_ very nice: this iso boots from USB on the R50e every time I try it, instead of only one out of ± 10 times like the other Mga4 Live isos I tried (a Mga4 dual booted well, too)
Ok, so one new test-iso added... Mageia-4-RC-noddh-LiveCD-KDE4-int-i586-CD This one has everything a normal livecd has, so it will run service_harddrake, but I have removed the display_driver_helper to see if it helps or not
(In reply to Thomas Backlund from comment #39) > Ok, > > so one new test-iso added... > > Mageia-4-RC-noddh-LiveCD-KDE4-int-i586-CD > > This one has everything a normal livecd has, so it will run > service_harddrake, but I have removed the display_driver_helper to see if it > helps or not Doesn't work for the ThinkPad L530 (I only tried normal and safe mode, didn't try adding any kernel options. Safe mode works again for the R50e :-), however: normal mode doesn't. I'll try to film the output of normal mode when using "splash quiet", there were some more "failed" messages than usually. Maybe the issue about USB keys that won't boot or take ages to get to the bootloader screen on that laptop is related to the size of the keys instead of to anything else... I just compared the "noddh" iso on a 2 GB and on a 8GB USB-key, 2GB works fine, 8GB doesn't
Created attachment 4718 [details] R50e last messages when booting normally (noddh iso) (In reply to Marja van Waes from comment #40) > (In reply to Thomas Backlund from comment #39) > > Ok, > > > > so one new test-iso added... > > > > Mageia-4-RC-noddh-LiveCD-KDE4-int-i586-CD > > Safe mode works again for the R50e :-), however: normal mode doesn't. > > I'll try to film the output of normal mode when using "splash quiet", there > were some more "failed" messages than usually. > The additional "[FAILED]" messages for the R50e are: Failed to start LSB: VirtualBox Additions Service. Failed to start Configure CPU power related settings Failed to start LSB: Ati Events Daemon the attached screenshot is with the last messages before the screen turned light black and every thing was frozen. I can upload a video of all messages if needed @ tmb Should this bug be cloned because it is about at least two different issues, or isn't that a problem atm?
Mageia-4-RC-noddh-LiveCD-KDE4-int-i586-CD on ThinkPad SL510: Same as with the L530, it doesn't work, neither in normal, nor in safe mode. I now remembered to look at tty4, there were recurring messages there, too: PCMCIA: probing PCI bus not found PCMCIA: probing PCIC (ISA) not found PCMCIA: probing Databook TCIC-2 (ISA) not found In normal mode, those messages recurred 4 times. I may have made a typo here or there, while copying them.

Mageia-4-RC-LiveDVD-KDE4-x86_64-DVD.iso round 5 On TP L530 tried all of the following, one after another: * normal boot: gets stuck at the same "checking new hardware" & "starting netprofile" loop again * safe boot: halts there, but doesn't seem to loop * rd.blacklist=intel xdriver=vesa * acpi_osi="!Windows 2012" they all got stuck at "checking new hardware" & "starting netprofile" loop again (but safe boot showed that text only once, IIRC) I was unable to go to a different tty
Mageia-4-RC-LiveDVD-KDE4-x86_64-DVD.iso round 5 On TP SL510 normal boot + safe boot both led to the "checking new hardware" & "starting netprofile" loop didn't try any options. switching to another tty was impossible I had forgotten to mention that, for the L530, I had tried "systemd.unit=multi-user.target" too, without success
Round 5 on nvidia/sandy bridge: none of the workarounds gives me a live session.

If so, which?
@tmb on #c47 Yes boots fine to Live mode without any workaround !!
round 6 boots to a working live session with out any workaround
