Description Shlomi Fish 2013-10-03 07:17:41 CEST
Description of problem:

On my machine (a Core i3) one, kernels 3.11.x cause a kernel OOPS/panic on startup and refuse to boot. kernel 3.10.10-desktop-3.mga4 works fine and boots and I can use KDE 4 or whatever.

You can find a screenshot of the OOPS here:

https://bugs.mageia.org/attachment.cgi?id=4384

And my system's SPECs are:

[Q]
My primary machine is a desktop machine with a:

An Intel Core i3 CPU (x86-64).
    8 GB of RAM.
Intel Corporation Sandy Bridge Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)
    A 2 TB hard-disk.
A 19×´ LCD Screen by ViewSonic.
Intel Corporation Cougar Point High Definition Audio Controller.
Intel Corporation 82579V Gigabit Network Connection.
[/Q]

Should I report this problem to the upstream kernel developers? ( https://bugzilla.kernel.org/ .)

Regards,

-- Shlomi Fish

Comment 1 Shlomi Fish 2013-10-04 09:20:50 CEST
Still happens with kernel-linus-latest-3.11.4-1.mga4 and kernel-desktop-latest-3.11.4-1.mga4 . Very annoying.

Comment 3 Chris Denice 2013-10-09 21:29:27 CEST
Is that not a duplicate of 11292?

Anyway, I confirm this on this old machine, and others, cannot boot kernel higher than 3.10.10, even the kernel-tmb 3.10.15 fails with the same symptoms.

cheers,
chris.

Hi,

(In reply to Chris Denice from comment #3)

that bug ( https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11292 ) was filed against dracut (and reportedly fixed) and this is a new bug - with the kernel. Perhaps we should close bug #11292 .

I don't know if it's exactly the same problem, but with kernel >3.10, the screen remain black after grub. There is disk activity , then the activity stops and still black screen.
Video is Radeon HD6850 + radeon/fglrx
Processor Phenom II x2 550.
Cauldron updated yesterday.
Kernel 64bits : 3.10.10-desktop-3.mga4
Message written under kernel 3.10

Cheers
Philippe

Hi Slomy,
check my last comment on #11292, that very same bug is from dracut, so I mark as duplicate.

cheers,
chris.
