Description Marja Van Waes 2013-10-02 08:44:53 CEST
with pre 4alpha3 from traditional installer DVD (i586), just after logging in, I get, just after I saw mageiawelcome started:

"Oh no! Something has gone wrong. etc."

switching to a console, loging in as root and doing
startx -- :1

doesn't work

I'll attach journalctl -a

"okt 01 19:31:27 localhost gnome-session[3138]: Unrecoverable failure in required component gnome-shell.desktop"
in that log is, I think, when I saw the "Oh no, something has gone wrong..."

cc'ing Dave, who had the same problem.

He saw errors in ~/.xsession-errors gnome-session-check-accelerated:
                                  Helper exited with code 256.

I disabled translucency hoping that would help, but then it already goes wrong before reaching the login screen. After re-enabling it the login screen is reached again.

What is the difference between "GNOME" and "Gnome" in the DE list in the login-password screen?
Comment 5 Dave Hodgins 2013-10-02 21:19:10 CEST
This is the same as I encountered in the live iso images previously

Sorry, meant virtualbox classical installs, not live.

When I tried to start the Gnome 3 (Mageia 4, beta 1), an error message appeared:

Oh no! Something has gone wrong.
A problem has occurred and the system canât recover.
Please log out and try again.
[Log out]

This error occurred after the installation of the package "task-gnome-minimal-3.10.1-2.mga4.noarch"

After I install package "task-gnome-3.10.1-2.mga4.noarch", with the full instalation of the Gnome 3, this error did not appear anymore and the Gnome 3 opened without problem.

Is this still valid in an updated Mageia 4 and Mageia 5 RC?

I have a personal workaround for this with the intel 915 driver for the 82855GME graphic controller: in my laptop i configured the vesa generic driver, and forced the screen resolution and gnome starts, I can login with a full desktop and runs smoothly

May be the intel driver is not capable to run the composite extension....

There was no activity in this bug report since over 2 years ago, most likely a more recent Gnome version fixed it.

Please reopen this report if needed.
