Description Robert Wallace 2013-09-09 20:12:29 CEST
Mageia3 LiveCD KDE4 download was successful, md5 sum matching. Installed on CD and attempting to boot brings up error message

Mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop0, missing codepage or helper program, or other error
dracut warning: /sysroot has no proper rootsf layout, ignoring and removing offending mount hook.

Several attempts to boot have produced the same result, suggesting a possible problem with the iso image.

Where did you download it from (which mirror, torrent?) and what was the md5sum ?

One download each from the KDE 32-bit iso link, and from the KDE 32-bit Torrent site. Dual-boot allows for using Windows to attempt to get the file, that download earlier today from Fort Worth, Texas, found one iso link going to a web site identified as CN, that quickly cancelled, then the Torrent link, both using the 32-bit link, this second going to a site identified as AU. Went to the mirror page to find a location in the U.S. and got the file, have now learned that the CD-RW disks here will not write. Will get a new pack of disks and copy the file then attempt to boot from it.

The md5sum for each file on Monday had the correct number when checked. Will keep giving it a try.

how did you write your iso on the cd?

Under Linux, K3B; under Windows XP, ImgBurn. K3B returned a cdrecord error 254 code on several of the CD-RW disks, ImgBurn kicked out the unwritable sector message.

well this doesn't mean it was correctly burned. you can check the md5 or the sha1 of the cd-rw to confirm

The disks were not getting completed, going under K3B to the 75% to 85% mark in writing to the disk, then quitting with the cdrecord error 254 message. The ImgBurn program running under Windows XP at least gave a readable error message to give some clue about what the problem might be. Off a bit later to get a new supply of CD-RW disks, the four being used more than four years old and not all that squeaky clean.

Turns out the issue may be more at my end than with the ISO file. The CD/DVD drive appears to have worn itself out, although it did write the ISO file to a totally new CD this afternoon with no error messages. An attempt to get it started on the laptop with the worn out CD/DVD drive got most of the way through the LiveCD start, but then failed to put any text into the popup boxes where one would normally expect text to be found. Moved over to the newer laptop which will replace this machine and found everything working as it's supposed to. The ISO file is correct, the md5sum works out correctly before putting the file on the CD disc, but was surprised when the LiveCD did not get all the way to the main screen. On the refurbished laptop just purchased, no problem in getting all the way there, the screen coming up as it's supposed to. Now to work out details for installing Mageia on this new laptop.

Thanks a lot for the feedback, Bob :-)

Sorry to hear the old CD/DVD drive has become buggy. Closing the report, though, because it doesn't count as a bug for us.
