Fedora 19 added a new free software packaged called unar (see 3.1.2.2): http://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/Fedora/19/html/Release_Notes/sect-Release_Notes-Changes_for_Desktop.html It can be used to replace the non-free unrar package for extracting RAR files. Here is a blog post about it: http://fedoranext.wordpress.com/2013/05/21/free-and-open-source-support-for-rar-archives-in-fedora/ It would be great to have this in Mageia, and integrated so that file-roller and ark can use it. To build, it requires some gnustep stuff which we appear to also not have packaged. Here is the website for unar: http://code.google.com/p/theunarchiver/ Reproducible: Steps to Reproduce:
[dams@hupstream ~]$ mgarepo maintdb get unrar anssi [dams@hupstream ~]$ Perhaps it will be good to have anssi POV as he is unrar non-free maintainer.

Hmm, it is not a direct replacement as it has a different name, right? If so, I don't have anything against including it.

Yes not direct replacement, it also handles many different formats and tools need to decide explicitly to use it. I think we should have it.

A good argument for adding this is the fact that unrar is Proprietary, while unar is Free software.
Another one is that at least file-roller can use it since GNOME 2.6 (https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=646606). But I don't think we need more arguments, no one is opposing it :)

I' ll try to import it from Fedora packages. Then, assigning this bug report to myself. Greetings.

I' ve imported unar package from Fedora with a little modifications and submitted to Cauldron. It can be directly used with file-roller or engrampa. Tested with engrampa and it nicely opens rar archives without unrar is installed.
