The collection/setup of the package groups in the Custom Desktop install takes anywhere from 30 seconds to minutes even on a fast processor.  During this time, the main panel window has been cleared, but nothing repaints, and there is no indication of what is going on,  There should be a popup like "Identifying installable packages; this may take a while" just as for the "Looking at packages already installed" popup.
