Description Sai Prashanth 2013-08-04 12:37:16 CEST
Alomst all of the HP laptops have 3D Driveguard. This package is crucial for the HP laptops that include the 3D Driverguard (many from HP) and should be included in Mageia. The device use the PC accelerometer device used to park the hard drive spindle when the notebook PC falls or is in motion. When functioning correctly, an amber LED will light in the hard drive notification area.

Now, the driver for the accelerometer is loaded by default in Linux Kernel as modules hp_accel and lis3ld02d. It can be used as a Joystick as well. And works really well in Mageia. I have it on my HP Pavillion DV6 3052TX with Mageia 3 x86-x64. So in order to activate the protection it is needed to run the hpfall.c deamon that is not included in Mageia by default. In order to render usefulness of the sensor on the HP laptops the package should be included in Mageia. Otherwise, the device won't protect the hard disk in case of fall and it
is useful just to play pinball with the HP laptops.

I am new to linux and i personally do not know how to compile hpfall.c and make it work. Can anyone compile it so that it could be installed on HP laptops?

I do not have HP laptop, so cannot help, but upstream source is at
https://github.com/srijan/hpfall.git

and Arch Linux package as an example is at https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/hpfall-git/

Mageia 3 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status 4 months ago.
http://blog.mageia.org/en/2014/11/26/lets-say-goodbye-to-mageia-3/

Mageia 3 is no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of Mageia
please feel free to click on "Version" change it against that version of Mageia
and reopen this bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
