Description René Lagoni Neukirch 2013-06-24 11:17:07 CEST
Description of problem:

I've done several clean installs on M3.
I cannot get the wireless to work --- at all.
I've tried on several platforms and with RealTec 8192cu 801.11n
   and Atheros 5212/13.

I've looked into the somewhat contradictory erratas and to no avail.

How to reproduce:

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Try to configure with MCC.
2. The link does NOT work.
3. Going back in the MCC the configurations drops back to openWEP despite my selection af WPA2 with private key.
4. Deleting the interface the MCC states the network card as a DRAM controller.

It seem that it is not possible to connect to the AP.
I have several Windozes, Androids and a wireless printer connected to the router, a ZyXel P-2601HN-F1.

What on earth to do ?

Reproducible:

Are you using KDE or Gnome?

> Are you using KDE or Gnome?

I use KDE 4.10.2 but NO applets from KDE and NO konfiguration via KDE.

My kernel is 3.8.13-server-1.mga3
Comment 3 Sander Lepik 2013-06-24 11:41:50 CEST
I would suggest you to try with NetworkManager.

1. Install this package: plasma-applet-networkmanagement.
2. Use MCC and configure your wireless device to be managed by NM.
3. Reboot your system.
4. After logging in right-click on the small icon that displays hidden tray icons and choose properties. From there enable network management and try to use it to configure your connection.

Does this help or is the result the same?

OK - 1. Install this package: plasma-applet-networkmanagement.
OK - 2. Use MCC and configure your wireless device to be managed by NM.
OK - 3. Reboot your system.
NOT OK - 4. After logging in right-click on the small icon that displays hidden tray
icons and choose properties. From there enable network management and try to
use it to configure your connection.

Also if I just try to enable the wlan - the applet dies.
Again the configuration does NOT keep the wanted WPA2 personal key config.

So unfortunately this did not solve my problem.
Comment 5 Sander Lepik 2013-06-24 12:19:01 CEST
Which applet dies? Plasma applet or net_applet? Which applet did you use to configure your network? Don't use the net_applet. I don't wanna believe that the NM applet can't remember the configuration. Never seen that before :/

Well, maybe several things are in action here ?

Pls look into bugs 8754, 8756 9541, 10013 and 10150.

I cannot find any plasma-applet besides the network applet - that I activated via the KDE Start Menu - and which is the one that dies. As it seems I should NOT use this:
Can you maybe guide to the right applet to use - I cannot find it using run og in the KDE menu. Spo how to strat the applet ?

What was not OK with that? You didn't find how to do it or ... ?

I decided to reboot just in case ..
Now I have enabled the applet, configured the wireless with WPA2 PSK.
I now sees the network - PROGRESS ! - but it does not connect, unfortunately.
Comment 9 Sander Lepik 2013-06-24 13:54:14 CEST
What's the output of this command: ps aux|grep wpa

Also, what do you see in dmesg, anything interesting there?
Comment 10 René Lagoni Neukirch 2013-06-24 14:02:50 CEST
To both 8 and 9:

rln@rln ~]$ ps aux | grep wpa
root 1044 0.0 0.0 45888 3312 ? Ss 13:46 0:00 /usr/sbin/wpa_supplicant -u -f /var/log/wpa_supplicant.log -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -iwlan0 -P /run/wpa_supplicant.pid
rln 5459 0.0 0.0 13832 660 pts/1 D+ 13:56 0:00 grep --color wpa

Therefore - only one WPA supplicant is running.

dmesg filter for 2 items, 8192 and link:

[rln@rln ~]$ dmesg| grep 8192

One more observation:

Even if the wif card is configured via the applet, when I try to enable it the applet asks for SSID, and the the applet asks for security and PSK ... hm strange.
Comment 12 Sander Lepik 2013-06-24 14:16:05 CEST
Please attach the output of this command: systemctl status -n300 NetworkManager.service
Comment 13 René Lagoni Neukirch 2013-06-24 14:33:23 CEST
FYI: I tried to make the SSID visible, I'v tried to hard-configure the connection with IP etc.

And as of the requested command.
Sure, here is the lot:

Check the end of /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf and delete any blocks that describe your SSID.

Also, please _attach_ /var/log/wpa_supplicant.log

Deleted the 7 lines from /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf (just to make sure :-)

Reboot, after that try to connect and after that attach the output of this command: dmesg|tail -n 300
Comment 19 René Lagoni Neukirch 2013-06-24 15:42:16 CEST
(In reply to Sander Lepik from comment #18)
> Reboot, after that try to connect and after that attach the output of this
> command: dmesg|tail -n 300

I tried just to start the connection. Entered the SSID, and then entered the PSK.
Then both the hidden and 3 (three networks all named SCBD52D8) wre shown, but no connection.
I deleted all and tried again - still no connection.

The applet states a hidden network and still asks for SSID.
Then (KDE) configuration is started and I have to select WPA2/PSK security and then enter the PSK - a new connection is created - thus the pre-configured configuration seems not to be used ???

And the output:

[root@rln rln]# dmesg | tail -n 300

Thomas, do you have any ideas what else might be wrong? Would the kernel from updates_testing change something or not?

CC: (none) => tmb

Comment 21 René Lagoni Neukirch 2013-06-24 16:25:34 CEST
yet some additional observations:

I removed all I could of interfaces both via the MCC center and via KDE.

Then I tried the applet again - it seems that trying to connect involves some network adapter configuration.
I noted that only 802.11 b/g were flagged not ..n. The router should accept all 3, though.

In the MCC, when I remov thee KDE created connections they are flagged as ethernet connections SCBD52D ... -1 ... -2 etc.
This is different from the MCC configuration which configures a Wlan adapter (Realtek 802.11n) but flags it as a DRAM controller when removing it again.

Well, this c o u l d be related to kernel versioning, I think.
I had an older platform up and running M2, M3RC with wireless working just fine.

I now try a clean install on that - and then I use ONLY the applet.
Then I shall report back - Sander, thank you so much for your effort !!!

Ah, I forgot: This platform uses an Atheros 5212/13 - will that help ?
Comment 24 René Lagoni Neukirch 2013-06-24 17:35:53 CEST
I now have the old platform running.
I tried the plasma-applet both before and after updating via medias.

Again some extra network entries are created flagged in MCC as Ethernet (SCBD52D8) and ... -1).
The use of ath5 is flagged, and I se one other network now.

But still, alas, no connection obtained to my network.

This for what it's worth, as I only see the system as a user ...
Comment 25 René Lagoni Neukirch 2013-06-24 17:53:37 CEST
Supplemental observation:

On BOTH platforma (ie. on Atheros 5212/13 and 8291cu network adapters) the applet flags band til b/g and channel to -1 (MINUS one).

On both then signal strength i 0% (ZERO percent) for my network (SCBD52D8).
Comment 26 René Lagoni Neukirch 2013-06-26 09:58:30 CEST
Observation on /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf et al.

If I by hand delete the section/block describing my SSID and try to connect via the plasma-applet, then signal strength is back - close to 100% in fact - otherwise it is 0 (zero).

And again I just to be sure re-check that only one wp_supplicant is active.
This has been no problem hitherto, though. Only one is running, every time I check.

Then, there seems to be some negotiation going on, but only on b/g not n and via channel 0. The router has been locked to channel 10 now - the best one as of signal quality.

The BSSID/mac addr. of the router is shown with all zeroes: 00:00:00:00:00:00 even if I hardcode it when entering the KDE configuration via the plasma-applet.

Still the plasma-applet asks for a network EVERY time I try to connect, and an Ethernet (SCBD52D8) entry is added in MCC withe extensions ...D8-1) ...D8-2) ...D8-3) etc..
These connections are also seen in the KDE4 system configuration tool (networking) but they are NOT editable/deletable and are flagged never to have been connected.
I then use MCC to delte each and every entry.

So, as I understand it, the router can now be detected - but, maybe many other, things still go wrong and I cannot connect with wireless.

Error message from KDE.

I left the system for a long time, due to a phonecall.
When I got back, there were approx. 13 (thirteen) errormessages - pls see attached png.

VERY good news !!!

I did a full "reburn" of my older platform with Atheros 5212/13.
I updated everything and added the plasma-applet.
I deleted the wlan0 entry via MCC.
I stopped the wired etho connection, configured the wireless through the plasma applet - and EUREKA ! It nows works as I am using the wireless connection to write this message.
I am just totally confused - either some updates did it or the change of network card did it ???
I did NOT wokr a couple of weeks ago though !!

Now remain to get my platform with rtl8192cu running - still no success here.

And again Sander - thanks for the guidance to this goal.

BACK TO SQUARE ONE !

I really don't get this at all.

Today I tried to switch just to ejoy the victory of the "reburned" (old) platform with Atheros 5212/13, which worked the other day.

It is now IMPOSSIBLE toget it to connect to the wireless.
The configuration of the wireless adapter does not find the proper wireless channel it seems.

AND nothing else has changed in my entire setup for the LAN.

For my new platform it seems that my router falls back to 802.11 b/g provided just one unit is connected via these freqs.
And in turn it seems that the rtl8192cu adapter cannot "downgrade" from 802.11 n to either b or g.

BIG SIGH !
Comment 30 Sander Lepik 2013-06-28 21:07:41 CEST
Have you tested with another channel on te router side? Is there any device in your network that is able to connect to that router?
Comment 31 René Lagoni Neukirch 2013-06-28 21:15:51 CEST
Yes, I have various devices connected, eg. a Windoze XP, a Windoze 7 and a wireless HP printer. Also Androids do connect.

My new platform with 8192cu won't connect wirelessly whatsoever.

I just tried freezing on channel 10 on the router.

Now it is possible AGAIN to connect wirelessly via the old platform with Atheros 5212/13.

Does this help ? I am confused.
Comment 32 Sander Lepik 2013-06-28 21:19:16 CEST
It might be something to do with your router or other devices connected to the router. At my parents home when any other device is connected to the router my dad's laptop won't connect and it's running XP not linux.
Comment 33 René Lagoni Neukirch 2013-06-29 13:17:40 CEST
Sander, I'm afraid, that you are not quite right, that it is the router that fails.

If I reboot the plasma-applet sometimes connects my old Linux/Atheros allright.
If I then log out and in again it does not.

If I in bothe cases configure yet another connection via the plasma-applet the very same machine connects again.
Comment 34 René Lagoni Neukirch 2013-07-04 15:20:54 CEST
DEFINATELY the error lies within M3.

For the record I have now tried 3 (three) different routers - ZyXel, Netgear and CISCO.

The behaviour is CONSTANT across those 3 (which is in a sense comforting), namely, that the Atheros 5212/13 does connect with some help/handson.

The 802.11n does NOT - whatsoever - (which is really bad). It always awaits some kind of recognition/acknowledgement after having found a chanel, the AP MAC etc.
It seems, that no IP is allocated - I tried of course to set the IP in the config - but no succes either way.

I really don't know what to do now or where to look.

Any suggestions or help ???
Comment 35 René Lagoni Neukirch 2013-07-15 15:21:13 CEST
Definitely ...

Does someone have some idea on what to do.
It's a rather annoying error.

For my old platform I can work around by deleting older connections and establish a new one after each boot.
This is with the old Atheros 5212/13 and the ath5 driver.

For my new platform the Realtek does not connect - it awaits some kind of acknowledgement forever.

Pls. advise ...

No, but we're all volunteers who work on this project in our free time. I think there are currently almost 3000 open bug reports.

For me it works if I uninstall networkmanager, then setup the connection with drakconnect http://doc.mageia.org/mcc/3/en/content/drakconnect.html and then reboot.

I'll cc some more people who might know what else can be tried.
For Mageia 4, we hope to have a better solution for the networkproblems
https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Feature:NetworkDrakToolsImprovements

If you happen to have some free time, please consider spending time on making Mageia a better contribution. Bugsquad, QA team and many other teams could really use your help.

Ah, forgot to mention that I enable two options during set up:
* Start the connection at boot
* Allow access point roaming

Thx again Maja,

I've tried your method - unfortunately without success.
Do you use a Realtek 8192cu (802.11n) ??

I have several machines, and I can make it work, with some manual intervention after each boot on my machine (x64) with the ath5 driver.

All my machines are clean (new) installs of M3 (x64) with all updates.

I tried the drakconnect (again-again-again) and it did not connect.
Then I tried to run drakconnect from a # prompt.
Does the output below help ?? :

------------------------------------------------------------

[root@rln rln]# drakconnect

Addendum -
I double checked that there was NO RJ45 cable connected.
I then tried to start drakconnect after a reboot (to "clean" the machine) - a little different reaction (see below re ifplugd):

No, I have three other wlan adapters. The one I use at this moment on this system is a Ralink 802.11n

Someone from QA team has a Realtek rtl8192se, which is probably more similar to yours. I'll cc him.

Btw (sorry for not finding time to read all coments in this bug report), the summary is "Wireless: Unable to connect to a WPA2 network with hidden SSID"
Am I correct to understand that you can connect without problems if the SSID is visible?

@ Dick
According to the QA hardware list, you have a rtl8192se, of which I hope it is similar. Do you maybe have a suggestion?

*** NO, unfortunately, Atheros 5212/13 and the ath5 driver works either way.
The Realtek 8192cu works neither way :-(

Maybe some of the problem is, that the WPA2 flag is lost.
Sometimes when I look into the non-connecting adapter-config, it says e.g. OpenWEP or "nothing" ...

Can you try with the latest driver from realtec, as described here
https://forums.mageia.org/en/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=4242#p31035 ?

@ leuhmanu

bug 6031 and bug 8754 are related. Is it OK to close this one as a duplicate of the 8754 and set that one to Mageia 3 (MGA2TOO)?

*** This seems rather complicated - at least for me. I'm not comfortable with manual edit of system related files and configs ...
I do hope, that the solution is part of M4 (if not before).

OK, since all that is left of this bug report is the 8192cu issue, closing this one as a duplicate of 8754

I hope an easier fix or workaround will be found than the one in the forum thread we talked about
